No, hamsters can't be walked on a leash, though there are small animal leashes available. The leashes are mainly for ferrets and rabbits. Hamsters are so small that they can squeeze out of a leash and harness. You can let your hamster play in the bathtub (plug up the drain first) or in a Creature playpen.
Yes, there are hamster shows. This link might give you more info: http://www.hamsters-uk.org/ http://www.geocities.com/CalHamAssoc/
There are a few hamster breeds: the dwarf, the Chinese, and the Syrian/Golden, to name a few. http://www.hamsterhideout.com/breeds.html All are solitary animals except for the dwarf. Syrians are the most common hamsters available. Sometimes they are called other names like Black Bear but it is still a Syrian.
There are hamster breeders. You will have to do a search on that. and check out a potential breeder. Some breeders sell sick animals. I don't think hamsters sold by breeders are too expensive. One of my Creatures came from a breeder and only cost $5, compared to my other Creature who was bought at a pet store for $15.
