Meowmy wants to get two hamsters. She is willing to spend $200 on them, but no more than that. She doesn't want a dwarf either.

Here is the cage we want to get.

A few silly questions..

Can hamsters be walked?
Do they have hamster shows?
What kind of domestic breeds are there?
Is it possible to get one from a hamster breeder?
If so,how much more do they cost?

Meows, Amber. The cage is nice but hamsters have a tendency to gnaw on the bars all the time and develope sore red noses. Perhaps a 10 gallon tank with a screen lid would be a better choice. Much less expensive, too.

No, hamsters can't be walked on a leash, though there are small animal leashes available. The leashes are mainly for ferrets and rabbits. Hamsters are so small that they can squeeze out of a leash and harness. You can let your hamster play in the bathtub (plug up the drain first) or in a Creature playpen.

Yes, there are hamster shows. This link might give you more info: http://www.hamsters-uk.org/ http://www.geocities.com/CalHamAssoc/

There are a few hamster breeds: the dwarf, the Chinese, and the Syrian/Golden, to name a few. http://www.hamsterhideout.com/breeds.html All are solitary animals except for the dwarf. Syrians are the most common hamsters available. Sometimes they are called other names like Black Bear but it is still a Syrian.

There are hamster breeders. You will have to do a search on that. and check out a potential breeder. Some breeders sell sick animals. I don't think hamsters sold by breeders are too expensive. One of my Creatures came from a breeder and only cost $5, compared to my other Creature who was bought at a pet store for $15.

You can adopt a hamster from a rescue or shelter. Try Petfinder.com

Hi,Merlin.Thanks for responding!
We remember that with our white syrian hamster. He'd chew on the bars sometimes, but seemed to stop completely in his older years. He could still eat though.I have a ten gallon fish tank in my backyard, would it be possible to just buy a screen separate from it and put it on?

I figured that.I remember seeing bird halters, rat halters, and rabbit halters, just no hamster halters. We have a creature playpen from former hamsters, and a few play things like a hamster TV and such.

I've only had pet store hamsters.I never enjoyed watching them,in tiny little cages with 30 other hamsters, fighting with eachother.

I think our local SPCA has hamsters at their rescue.I will look it up.

Sincerely,
Amber
