My beautiful, sweet, and smart Korat mix, Harriet, has developed a habit for biting my face. She'll sometimes strike out at me unprovoked (I'll be sitting on the floor next to her and she'll suddenly lunge and bite my cheek or neck, and she gets very agitated when I try to pull away or cry out "ouch!"). Other times I'll be holding her--she seems relaxed and content--and she'll suddenly bite at my face and neck. If I stay still, she'll bite even harder.
I've read a bit about biting and I know it could be contributed to her age (8 months) and her instincts as a predator, but it feels so personal. frown I exercise / play with her a lot throughout the day so she can expend some of her energy (she's an indoor-only cat; I live in a busy area), but she still lashes out sometimes. Any suggestions? I'm considering getting a companion cat for her, as I've also read that sometimes cats act out when they don't have enough attention throughout the day; I'm thinking it might be good for her to have another kitty around when I'm not at home (tho' like I said, I do play and interact with her constantly when I am home).

Any suggestions are welcome.
thanks,

Katie, Harriet's companion.

P.S. I just read a WONDERFUL book about cats' emotions:

Little Guy bites my husband from time to time - usually on the hands. He and LG play rough with one another. I think LG bites when he wants to play or when he has the 'crazy eye'.

I don't know how to describe crazy eye other than to say it's a build up nervous or playful energy that seems to come out of no where.

Maybe Harriet is going through something similar? I don't allow LG to bite me. The times he has, I would tell him no, bite him back and walk away. Nothing rough or too hard. Can't damage Le Petite Monsieur.

Now if you'll excuse me, I must hurry back to Binty with fresh palm fronds....he awaits.

When Mae was younger she did the same thing. She would jump on us, dig her claws into our skin and bite. I think it has something to do with the age and having so much energy. She eventually grew out of it. She is approaching two years old and has much more controlled behaviors, but I have also spent time training her. Mae still bites, but usually she is playing or it is out of annoyance. If she bites hard, I will say "Ouch" in a stern tone and then tell her "Nice" or "Easy" and she will ease up. Try spending time with your cat teaching the same simple commands. Korats are typically very smart and trainable to an extent. Good luck!

I DO know what you mean by "crazy eye"...that's exactly how she's acting! She has gotten a bit better, actually, since we've started to do the 'ouch" + discontinue play with her when she bites. I think she's finally reacting to catnip, too, so she has begun to burn off a lot of energy and direct her bites towards her catnip sock mouse. We are thinking of getting her a companion kitty so she'll have someone to play with when we're not at home.

Do you think a male or a female would be better? Many people have told me a male might be a better match for a female, but I'm not sure. Any suggestions?

OMG! I LOVE to attack and bite my persons ankles, wrists and hands all the time! I don't know if I'm just being playful or if I'm being mean because I really love my Mommy.
