Does anyone have any suggestions of good really scary books? I suddenly feel like reading some horror. I've already read most of Stephen King, mostly when I was 12-13 going through a King phase. I still think It and 'Salem's Lot were great and scary. The Tommyknockers was awesome too, but I'd kind of throw that into the Sci-fi category. I'd like to find out about some ghost or possession type books that are really scary. I read some HP Lovecraft stuff, but I thought it wasn't really scary, just dramatic. Maybe I read the wrong stuff. I'd like to be really scared by a book like I was when I saw the movie the Exorcist when I was really young. It seems harder to get scared by things the older I get. Should I try reading some old vampire stuff or something?

I do not read scary stuff, Toki! You are one BRAVE kitty! What about Anne Rice? Is her vampire stuff scary? Or just more gothic? Or Dean R. Koontz? Is he scary?

thinking if it has to be vampires - why not read the original: bram stoker's 'dracula'?

or what about a mystery novel that back in the 80s became a great movie:
william hjortsberg's 'falling angel'

generally e.a. poe was a great writer of scary novels - and although old fashioned he's easy to read...

it's just ideas...

Hi Ishtar and Kingsley- Mom was just thinking about this yesterday, and went online and found a list of Best Horror Books. On the list was, of course, Dracula by Bram Stoker, like you said. We're going to read the original Victorian text instead of the abridged updated version, which I heard is bad. Also on the list was Watchers by Dean Koontz, and Interview with the Vampire by Anne Rice, both authors who Kingsley said might be good. Never read any Dean Koontz or Anne Rice, but I'm excited to. Although the movie of Interview with the Vampire was not scary. These are other scary books mom is going to get: I am Legend, and Hell House, by Richard Matheson, Ghost Story by Peter Straub, and the Omen by David Seltzer. Interestingly, mom's seen all the movies of these books. She thought the Omen was really scary, and heard the book is scarier. the I am Legend book is supposed to be totally scary and better than the movie. Of course. Mom was surprised to see on the list: Helter Skelter: the True Story of the Manson Murders, which she read one summer when she was 13. It was an incredible book, but she was surprised because it's a true crime book, not horror. It is definitely horrific though, and mom read it obsessively. If anyone else in this group is interested, Helter Skelter is a crazy-good read.

Brrrr...you are a braver kitty than we are, Toki!

We just got a true crime book called The Murder Room. It is about a club for the best forensic scientists and detectives and FBI types in the world and they meet and put their collective genius brains to work on cold cases. We heard about it on NPR. We have not really started it yet though. I will let you know if it is scary.

We also got Interview with the Vampire at the used book store. It was too gruesome for us. We took it back the next day. smile

So Interview With the Vampire was too gruesome for you, Kingsley... maybe I should read that next... heehee. Just kidding, horror doesn't always have to be gruesome. Is it the blood and such that you're not into, or just being scared in general? Stephen King can get pretty gruesome, but one of my favorites of his, The Tommyknockers, is not gruesome. I can't really remember any gore. It's about a writer that finds an ancient alien craft buried on her land and she begins to dig it up. It sounds kind of silly summarized like that, but it's a pretty awesome book. Did I already mention it? I think I did. Whatever.
I just got The Other by Thomas Tryon and I am Legend by Richard Matheson from the library. I am really excited to read them both. (but I also got Lyra's Oxford by Phillip Pullman, short story sequel to His Dark Materials trilogy -- and I'm going to read that first).
happy dance
The Other is set in the 30s, and is about twin boys, one EVIL. heeheehee. It's a psychological horror story. It was also made into a movie in 1972, but luckily I haven't seen it. It seems like every good horror story has been made into a movie. It's annoying, because I want to read a new-to-me story, without having to keep comparing it to the movie. Well, I'll post whether I like The Other- it's supposed to be one of the best.

Yes, Toki! It was too gruesome! I do not need to KNOW how vampires get their food! ICK ICK ICK!

The Murder Room is really good, though. Because I am a real weenie and I do not like to think about this stuff, I did not realize the depths of depravity that humans sink to.

And the brilliance of the good guys is astonishing--especially Frank Bender, who is an artist with a physic sense about what the criminals look like even though they may only have a 12-year-old grainy blurry photograph for him to go on.

Even though it is non-fiction, it is not creeping me out as much as Anne Rice did!

I meant to say PSYCHIC sense. Sometimes I do not make ANY kind of sense.

You didn't even need to post that correction because even though you first wrote "physic", I read it as "psychic" anyway. I didn't even consciously change it, it just happened. you know how weird brains are...
That book does sound great. Is there a true crime thread here? If not, we should start one. We can put in The Murder Room, and Helter Skelter: The True Story of the Manson Murders. Sometimes I think true stories are much creepier than fiction. It makes you think about whether there is real evil in people or whether they are just mentally ill and can't help it.
