No matter how much cats fight, there always seem be plenty of kittens------Abraham Lincoln

Here's a poem Mommi just loves---

BAST

She had green eyes, that excellent seer,
And little peaks to either ear.
She sat there, and I sat here.

She spoke of Egypt, and a white
Temple, against enormous night.

She smiled with clicking teeth and said
That the dead were never dead;

Said old emporers hang like bats
In barns at night, or ran like rats---
But empresses came back as cats!

Anyone remember when people used to say that if a kitty settled on your chest and placed their face close to yours that they were trying to steal your breath? Well, we think that they were probably just "checking" their breath to see if it was safe to settle down next to them.big laughbig laughbig laugh

Of all God's creatures there is only one that cannot be made the slave of the lash. That one is the cat. If man could be crossed with the cat it would improve man, but it would deteriorate the cat.

FUN

His amiable amber eyes
Are very friendly, very wise;
Like Buddha, grave and fat
He sits, regardless of applause,
And thinking, as he kneads his paws,
What fun to be a cat!

REANAN (- MRS.- MUTCHKA), wave I have heard stories of old, that a tom cat would suffocate a small baby by breathing the oxygen from the baby's nose. Ya' Rly! shock

Mama believes way back that cats naturally liked to curl up with a warm baby and maybe some illness killed the baby, but was blamed on the tom.

Mama believes if your cat truly knows you, he will lay on you were your body is not well or hurts. big grin Some cats are healers. way to go

I will chime in with more lore in later days. wink

Yes, Platelicker, we think it is just folklore as well. They might smell milk on the childs lips or maybe their body heat or perhaps they might think it's their kitten. People ofter said that you should not raise a baby and a kitten together as the kitten would literally draw the vitality from the childs body and it would wither and die. So many superstitions..............they were just trying to make themselves feel in control of circumstances that they clearly had no control over. In the 1800's and probably centuries before it was considered good luck to wall a live cat up in the walls of a house that was being built. Sometimes they are still found during renovations of these old houses........and some occupants report that they are haunted by the sounds and the fleeting images of said feline.

I can't find my story about the Birman at the moment but here are some of Meowmie's cat purrems. Gotta find that story. The tabby one too. Meowmie has a whole book of kitty superstitions somewhere.

A Cat's Prayer To the Sun

Sol
I lie in your warmth
I dream in your light
Sol
You are part of my power
You are part of my spirit
Sol
I thank you for your gift
I honor you always

Thoughts of a Katrina Cat

Here I sit in a cage
in a far off place from home
A storm, she came and took away
all that I had known
My family and friends I have not seen
since the roaring rain began
Will I see them again one day
or is this to be my end
These are the things I think about
and thousands like me too
You think of how to help humans
and forget we are there too
So this I ask you please
when the storms of life come
Don't forget we are there
cos we like you need someone

We Are Cat
from gods to monsters
we have been in your lives
for all the ages of your time
for some we are workers
for some we are pets
whatever we do
whatever we say
one truth so shall always remain
we are cat
