(Tiger's mom speaking) I feel the same way as you Neko's mom! No one I told about Tiger even knew what FIP was and yet the coronavirus that causes it is so common! I had my two cats tested for the coronavirus and they both came back positive....just assume that all or most of your cats have it. It is NOT a death sentence! I feed my cats Wellness Core, I have heard good and bad things about it but it works for us. I added another litter box and bleach them as much as possible. I also bleach clean the laminate floor the boxes sit on and vacuum the carpet near the room they are in frequently.

I recently took Tinker in to be vaccinated and I told the lady when I made the appointment that I only wanted her to have the rabies vaccine. (Not only because of the corona but cancer that can be caused by them, etc....plus, my vet said that after the 1st initial vaccines....Feline Leukemia, etc, not rabies....they get as kittens they are covered for life.) Well, some things came up and my husband had to take her in. Plus, the regular vet was not there. They gave her all the vaccines...I was livid! I was so mad at my husband for not speaking up and mad at the vet clinic for not doing what I asked. Tinker was pretty sleepy for a day or two and didn't eat much. I was super scared but she came out of it and is fine. It is your own decision but I recommend NOT getting any vaccines other than rabies for your cats. Besides, if they had all their initial vaccines as kittens they are covered!

My cats are pretty healthy. I don't give them anything extra....I pretty much tried to keep everything the same as before I knew they had coronavirus, except for the food. They do occasionally get watery eyes and sneezes...I speculate it's if they get reinfected but i'm not sure. Maybe it's if they are fighting it off.

A few months before Tiger got sick he got the watery eyes and seemed a little sick, we took him in and the vet gave him steroids. I believe this is what caused the coronavirus to mutate. Obviously, I am no expert but I think the steroids were a factor. Losing my Tiger was one of the worst things ever....but from his loss I have learned so much more about caring for my cats and I realized that I took them for granted for a long time! So now I appreciate every single day I have with them so much more because I know one day they'll be gone.

Sorry I did not get back to you last night but right as I was getting ready to type we had a family emergency and I am just now getting back to my computer..

First of all I get the Bach's Rescue Remedy at my local SaveMart..It is also sold at health food stores as well as online...I use it strictly for stressful situations...

http://www.bachflower.com/Pets.htm

I had never heard of the Transfer Factor complete...I looked it up..some of the ingredients I do not completely understand or know what they are...If I were you I would research it more...I am a bit skeptical of some of the claims made...but then I question everything and anything these days....

So sorry your Vet is not more open and understanding....I feel very blessed to have found Dr Steve....for the rabies..Here is the safe vaccine for cats....

http://www.drugs.com/vet/purevax-feline-rabies.html

I f your cats are strictly indoors I see no need to vaccinate them further as long as they had all of their kitten shots...the immunity stays in their systems...the yearly vaccines are a money maker for the vets....

I agree with Tiger's Mom..steroids are bad and due more harm than good..I was really slammed on the health forum for stating this but I feel very strongly against using them on a cat with a supected corona virus or any immune system problem.....Yes they will cause it to mutate....I have no proof of this other than what I feel in my heart...I often wonder if I had not given D-Max steroids if he would still be with me..The what if's would have could have's and guilt are something I carry with me every day..but having said that I have learned a lot from my experience....My education came too late....I too never ehard of FIP til the eye doctor tested for it..Dr Steve never once thought to test for it because D-Max was a pure bred not a shelter cat...but there was inbreeding in his lines..

Genectics I think plays a role in FIP but I think environmental factors are in play just as much...

Tiger's Mom....I am so sorry your Vet did that..I have a friend who lost her Bombay to FIP and her MIL took here current cat in for a rabies shot and was given all the vaccines against her wishes....Vets need to listen to us....We are paying them to take care of our fur kids..We are their voices..They can not talk to the vet...

Let's keep talking to each other and pray that no one else goes through the pain that we have gone through..And lets share what we are doing to keep out current cats healthy...

Agreed, Catster and this support group has given me so much comfort. I too live with the what if's a lot. I have just recently begun to remember the better times before Tiger got sick....that was so hard to do because the bad times were so bad. I will continue to direct other cats here for support because it is very important!

New question, believe this or not, today when I went to work someone dumped a mother cat and 4 kittens at the shed out back where the smokers go. First person they come tell is me, of course, I'm the cat lover. Obviously I dont feel comfortable adopting the cat and especially the kittens due to the exposure of my cats to the corona virus/ FIP. But....... no one else was going to do anything and I sure couldnt leave them there. At lunch I went and bought some kitten food, dry and cans and fed them. The poor things were starved. Now, I have them down my basement in a large dog cage. I plan on putting an ad in the newspaper tomorrow and intend on finding them all home including the mother. Question is, as long as I have them down the basement away from my other cats, I'm not putting these cats at risk, am I? I am making sure to wash my hands before and after touching them and they have no access to my other cats. I hope I havent made a mistake but I couldnt leave them outside behind a warehouse to fend for themselves. From what I read its saliva and litter boxes that have the most risk for spreading. I'm assuming there is always a small risk from my clothing???? I hope the risk is very small because I'd totally die is I hurt these cats. Any feedback would be great.

Feces is the main way coronavirus is transferred and any particles from it. So when you clean the litter box wash your hands, also the particles could be on your feet so clean your feet before you go down to the kittens. From what I've read saliva is only contagious for a short time period.
