Poor Zoe - I went to her page and read her diary entries. Her dad is heartbroken and is wondering if he did the right thing by helping Zoe to the Rainbow Bridge. What he did was the last, loving and kind thing to do for Zoe, she is now no longer in pain. Rest In Peace Zoe. I sent her a Rosette and gave her some bones.

I also went to Eddie's page. He seems to be feeling a little better but still has his drain tubes and stitches. I sent him a Rosette and a PPR for when he feels better. I also gave him some bones for when he starts to eat again. God Bless you, Eddie and also Zoe and her family.

Rowdy and mom Joan

Sammie's Diary
Mom\'s crying after call from the vet
July 14th 2007 7:05 pm [link to this entry]
Well, it seems that I have something called Diabetes. I know that mom loves me because she can't stop crying and loving on me. It's going to be hard for her but as you all know, the love shown by making the right decision for us furbabies is the greatest of all. I know I'm going to Rainbow Bridge and it'll be okay because I get to see Tequila again and I won't be in pain anymore, I just wish there was something I could do to ease my mom's pain. She still has my sisters Cocoa and Tori so that'll help.

If any of you can send good wishes my mom's way, I'd be so grateful.

Hi everyone,

Bella Rose here. I have this horrid disease that the humans call VKH. Is anyone out there familiar with it?

Mom has me on sterroids and eye drops and will soon start me on immuran per my doctor. She cries a lot because this disease is being pretty aggressive.

Anyone know of something that she has not tried. Or anyone out there willing to offer some support. I'm only a year old and now I'm 2 weeks blind and fighting a very aggressive disease.

Ruff you,
Bella

VKH Syndrome in Dogs

Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada-Like Syndrome (VKH Syndrome), also known as Uveodermatologic Syndrome, is an immune-mediated disease in which the body inappropriately attacks its own melanocytes. Uveitis leading to blindness is often the first noticeable sign and may appear as painful and/or bloodshot eyes, diminished vision, constricted pupils, cloudy eyes, or changes in eye color. Typically within three to six months after the eye disease has begun, the coat begins to whiten. This occurs in some 90% of affected dogs, though it sometimes only occurs on the face. Some 50% of affected dogs also experience a whitening of the skin, typically on the eyelids, footpads, lips, nose and scrotum.

Some believe that the immune-reaction of VKH Syndrome may initially be triggered by a virus. VKH occurs more commonly in male dogs, as well as in Nordic breeds and Akitas. Diagnosis is best done with a skin biopsy.

Because the eye disease has the most serious outcome (blindness) and the skin disease is typically only a cosmetic concern, treatment then focuses on the eye disease. Uveitis due to VKH syndrome is treated just as uveitis caused by other reasons. Corticosteroids such as prednisone are used orally and topically to suppress the inflammation. To prevent blindness, on-going immune suppression is needed for VKH syndrome and, often times, the corticosteroid is eventually switched to azathioprine. Continued topical treatment is also needed, usually with steroid-containing eye drops or steroid injection. Controlling eye pain may also be required.
