	Hello fellow constipation suffers! My name's Mittens and I also suffer from constipation. Not pleasant, eh? Sometimes I have to go to the vet for enemas. I HATE enemas and I HATE going to the vet! But I have to say that the Lactulose my mom gives me every day now has been keeping the pipes clean and functioning!

	My cat Lexus has had constipation issues for quite a few years. My new vet that I have started to take my cats to has been so helpful with her issue. She was completely cleaned out by the vet because the lactulaose, pumpkin, and Melaxicam were not working. She was straining so hard to go to the washroom that she would throw up. He said she had a really hard, old piece of stool blocking the passage way. He gave her an enema while she was under as well. Needless to say she was traumatized for a few days but is back to her normal wonderful self. She is on 100% pumpkin and lactulose to help keep her stools soft. She has been going about every 3-4 days for the last 2 weeks. So this is a start.....see how she makes out

	Well, Lexus went two days in a row and the stools are not rock hard- yay! It's a positive sign that the total clean out by the vet was a very good thing for her...I am keeping my fingers crossed that this continues. Although, I will continue her on the pumpkin and lactulose (and slowly cut back in a week or so)

	Bad and good news - Lexus had to go back to the vet for another enema on 1/5/09. The next day I decided to see a holistic vet to see how she could help Lexus get her constipation under control. She put Lexus on a stool softner called PEG (I think this is Miralax in the US) and it took her about 3 1/2 - 4 days but she finally had a stool and has been regular (everyday) since. This PEG has been a heaven send for Lexus. I have even been able to lower her dose by half....it works that good I feel positive knowing that if she starts to get constipated again I can increase the dose. My other cat has been having stools every 3 days...so I have been giving him baby food (peas w/ water) and he has been going everyday now. I tried the baby food butternut squash to no avail - it doesn't have as much fibre as the peas.

	Hi Lexus, I'm so glad that your mommy found something that works well for you. Each of us is different. Your new holistic vet seems to be helping you a lot. There are many kitties with chronic constipation or kidney disease who take Miralax every day and do very well on it. Mommy was going to try Miralax but the Lactulose works so well that's a case of why mess with success! I've just been diagnosed with intestinal lymphoma and am on chemo and prednisone and since starting chemo, the Lactulose isn't working very well anymore. Mommy isn't sure what to do! How much Lactulose were you taking every day? Mommy gives me about 6 ml a day in a treat meal right before bedtime. She mixes it in foods that are runny and brothy because you need to take Lactulose with lots of fluids or water for it to work. My internal medicine specialist/oncologist told mommy that chronic constipation is an inflammatory intestinal disease --IBD/IBS. Mommy has joined groups for humans who have chronically constipated cats or cats with IBD and found out many of those cats do best on a low fiber/low residue diet or raw diets. When mommy tried to switch me to raw food and added a supplement to it that had lots of fiber in it, along with added pumpkin in the food, I got very sick, stopped eating, ran a high fever and had to go to the vet for an enema, subq fluids and take antibiotics. It took 2 weeks for me to recover! So I'm back to eating canned food. Good luck and I hope the Miralax continues to work for you and you don't need any more enemas!

	Mommy was going to try Miralax but the Lactulose works so well that's a case of why mess with success! Mommy isn't sure what to do! ****Many people that have used Lactulose end up saying that it doesn't work after a while. This was also the case with Lexus....give Miralax a try. According to my holistic vet it is better for the cat because it pulls water from the intestine. While lactulose pulls water from the entire body? You may also have to give her cisapride as her muscles may not be able to push the stool out anymore. These are some things to talk with your vet about.... Edited by author Sun Feb 8, '09 3:08pm PST

	Thank you Lexus! Mommy will give Miralax a try. It can be bought OTC, right? I'm used to Lactulose and hope the Miralax can be mixed in my food without me knowing it's there. Mommy isn't sure she wants me on any more medications/pills because I'm stressed out enough taking the medications I need to take for my cancer (prednisone and cyclophosphamide) but will talk to my vet about cisipride if I develop problems.

	It can be bought OTC, right? I'm used to Lactulose and hope the Miralax can be mixed in my food without me knowing it's there. *I live in Canada and it can be bought over the counter (much cheaper then the vets office). Here in Canada it is called PEG 3350. You may want to run it by your vet first and if you can't get it over the counter then your vet can call you in a prescription wherever you choose. You may have to play with the dosing at first. I still have to play with it and I have been giving it to Lexus for 2 months but i am happy she is passing a stool every 2 days rather than 4-5 days. I mix it into her food with a bit of added water for moisture. It is a tasteless odourless powder type substance. She doesn't even notice it is in her food. Less stressful for both her and I. I feed my cats a raw diet mixture which has added squash/pumpkin and a few other things thats supposed to help with regular bowel movements. So, you can just mix it into your kitties canned food. Mommy isn't sure she wants me on any more medications/pills because I'm stressed out enough taking the medications I need to take for my cancer (prednisone and cyclophosphamide) but will talk to my vet about cisipride if I develop problems. *Cisapride is only required if the cats muscle do not work to push out the stool. But give Miralax a try for a while first. Some people who were giving Lactulose and Cisipride to their cats once switched to Miralax (instead of lactulose) they took their kitties off of Cisapride b/c the Miralax did the job to soften the stools. There is also a group on Yahoo "Feline Megacolon" that deals with constipation issues. I joined it for this reason and this group was the one to lead me towards miralax. Constipation if left can lead to Megacolon for cats. Please keep me updated on how your kitty is making out

	Hi Lexus How are you doing on the Miralax? Are you going as often as you should? I hope it's working better for you than the lactulose was. 4-5 days is a really long time between poops! It's so hard for us constipated kitties to get regular and stay that way. You do need to mix lots of water or fluids with lactulose or it doesn't work properly. Not everyone knows that. I remember someone in a forum somewhere who fed her kitty a raw diet and she said she always added the lactulose to a few teaspoons of water and then mixed it in with the raw food. I guess it's the same with Miralax. Mommy always adds the lactulose to a cat food that has lots of watery broth, like Tiki Cat. Even if I won't eat the food, I usually lap up the broth. If mommy is desperate, she'll open a can of human tuna and give me the tuna water with the lactulose mixed in it. That always works but she rarely has to do that. You can also buy Miralax OTC in this country. It comes in powder form. We asked our vet about Miralax and she wants me to stay on the lactulose. Fortunately, it's working again and I'm pooping every other day. whew!!! We used to belong to the Yahoo Feline Megacolon group. We joined in Jan. 2007 after I'd been hospitalized twice because of my constipation and everyone in the group was extremely nice and a HUGE help. Mommy used to worry that I'd get megacolon but not anymore. I've had 3 rounds of xrays, 2 ultrasounds and an endoscopy over the past year. Mommy always asks about megacolon and the one thing I definitely don't have is megacolon. I have cancer and my prognosis is 1-2 years with chemo. When I was diagnosed in December, I was in bad shape and rapidly losing weight and the specialist told mommy that without doing chemo, I wouldn't last through the summer. So mommy's biggest worry is how long I'm going to live. Fortunately the chemo appears to be working and I seem much better. Mommy's hoping I'll be one of the fortunate ones who live for 3 years. Let me know how you're doing. Hope the Miralax is doing the trick for you!

	Hi Mittens, It definately has been a roller coaster ride for Lexus. She would go without pooing for 4-5 days and then I'd introduce something new and she go 5 days straight...after several enemas and manual extraction the vet finally took an xray. And she definately does have Megacolon. So, now I am trying to find the right dose of Cisapride/Miralax combination. We had a really bad episode when I first started her on Cisapride. She had diarrhea all night and 2 baths (I have never given her a bath in her life). Needless to say it was a very stressful night. So, I immediately lowered the dose and am increasing it slowly. I have ordered some B-12 Methylecobamin to help her with motility. I am hoping that eventually I could take her off of Cisapride if this helps with motility. So sorry to hear about Mittens....must be very hard for you to deal with? I guess all you can do is make the little time she has left as comfortable as possible. You are a great mom Mittens must love you so much! Give her a great big hug for me! Take care!
