Can anyone recommend cleaning products - both store bought brands and homemade - that you know are non-toxic and safe for pets? I'm thinking especially about products to clean floors, etc. where my kitty will definitely come in contact with it.

Hi Alice, wave

I use Oxyclean to clean the litterbox and remove carpet stains (though it doesn't always remove the entire stain) and don't see why you can't use that to mop the floors. I even used it to clean my deck one year laugh out loud because it doesn't hurt plants or animals. I also use the Swiffer wet on the kitchen floor and it doesn't seem to bother Pookie.

Other cleaners I use: vinegar. It's anti-bacterial and breaks up the hard-water scale that forms along the water line of his water fountain. I just soak the fountain in 50/50 water/vinegar for a while and wash with a cloth.

I've heard of people mixing vinegar and baking soda to clean stains, and I use that to clean my drains and birdbath, but don't know about using that on floors. I think you can use baking soda to clean carpet stains but not sure. I'm sure there's plenty of info on the internet if you Google it.

I don't really use any other cleaners than these. I hope this helps!

Hi Alice, it's really tough to find things that are safe for us kitties. The suggestions Pookie gave are great! The other thing to remember when buying something in the store that says "natural". Make sure it doesn't have essential oils, most of them do. Essential oils are very toxic to us kitties and we'll absorb it through our skin into our livers where we can't process it or filter it. Stinks doesn't it?

When was this section born, mol, I only noticed it today. big grin

Never use Pine Sol, or products with pine oil in them, they are toxic to cats.

I don't clean, that is Smokey's responsibility. They all have to learn a trade, mol, Cruiser is going to chef school, Bump and the kittens are show cats, and mommy works 6 days a week. laugh out loud

I have seen some at Petco, when working for Nutro doing demos. You could also check PetSmart.
Good Luck.

I've heard good things about the steam mops for cleaning floors. I try to use "green" cleaners and go over the area with plain water when I'm done as a rinse. Isabelle doesn't want anything to do with wet floors anyway, so she never walks on them when they're wet. way to go
