|For those who don't know, Sustainable Selections is a program that allows for meat that is past its sell by date (which is usually two or three weeks prior to the actual expiration date) to be donated (for a fee - I think it's around $100 for basically all the meat you want or need) to places like zoos, wildlife sanctuaries, and ... raw feeders ... for use as pet food. One of the members who frequents the Dogster raw feeding forum participates in this, and she has said that though sometimes some of the meat she gets is enhanced or processed (bacon, lunch meat, etc.) she also usually always will get plenty of usable meat. I don't know how many people here have dogs, too, but for people who have multiple cats, or who like Mo are caring for large numbers of barn or feral cats, this might go a long way toward reducing their food bills, and it is good for the planet, too, as it keeps all that usable food from going to landfills.
I just saw that there is a Yahoo group dedicated to this, which I have joined, though membership has to be approved and mine has not been yet. Once I see more of what is involved, I will post back, but for anyone interested in joining, the link to the group site is:
