We all know about the dreadful puppy mills.
And "parrot mils".
And, recently, I found out that they have "pet mills" where they produce all kinds of rodent like pets- from guniea pigs to hamsters to gerbils to mice- and sell them to pet shops and such places.
Well, I was wondering, out of curiosity since I'm more alert about these things these days- are there "kitten mills"?
Does any cat here know if there is?
I know this isn't a warm discussion- but, as I said, I'm being more cautious these days now that I know about BYBs, mills and such places. shrug

You can search the web for "kitten mills" and, unfortunately, plenty of links will appear. frown

Hi Malik,

I live in Quebec Canada and unfortuantly we have the worst reputation for animal mills we also supply most of the animals to North America. The answer to your question is YES and it is horrible. Will you beable to find them NO because they do not advertise. They mostly have closed connexions with the petshop industrie. Is there away to stop them? Unfortunatly not really this is a complex issue that involves more than one group of pepole at verious different levels of society. But if you do not want to support these mills your best option is to ALWAYS adopt from a local resuce or shelter.

Unfortunatly the reason why Quebec is so ripe with these mills are due to our terrible animal cruelty laws. As a whole we are bad but are starting to improve as more and more individuals are starting to speak up.

The Quebec mentality is that Animals are disposable. Its the culture and it take generations to change the culture.

I know this is a horrible topic but once in a while to address it and be aware of it is good. Hopefully many people will read this and rethink where they get thier pets from.

Please don't think I'm being pious or anything I have bought pets from a pet shop myself.

Believe me- I won't be buying from any pet shops anytime soon. I haven't since I heard of puppy mills. My dog Cinnamon came from a pet shop, though. And, with research, I found out she's probably a puppy mill puppy. Though she's healthy as a horse- I've heard one of her brothers weren't so lucky. When you live in a small town, sometimes it's easy to find people. shrug

Anyway, that's what I was afraid of hearing- but, it's better to be aware of them than unaware. At least when you're aware you can inform other people and be careful where you buy.

I, personally, will be rescuing my next cat. She'll be a chinchilla persian preferbally 2 or 3 years old. The only reason I'll buy any pets in the future will be for show purposes. I find it hard to trust almost any breeder.

I mean, I've even heard of AKC breeders lying and getting around things. In fact, there was one that lived around here that sold "teacup" and "tiny toy" chihuahuas. It was crazy.
