Thank you all for the good advice. I hadn't even thought about unscented baby wipes. Also, I think you might be right about the food. Cleaning his box again I've discovered that its not diarraha, but his stool is softer than what I think it should be. I'm sending my vet a stool sample tomorrow (as they are closed today) for them to check and have him dewormed.

James is very playful and also likes cuddle time with me smile He purrs constantly and kneads the whole time during cuddle time.

Thanks so much!

Prob the food, try a good grain free wet food - chicken or turkey.
Stay away from foods in gravies.

When I adopted two kittens from the local humane society a little over a year ago, they had an "odor" to them as well. It wasn't a poopy smell so much as just a little stinky. Looking back, I think they just hadn't quite gotten the hang of cleaning themselves really well- mine were 11 weeks when I brought them home.

I wasn't allowed to bathe them at first (due to their fresh stitches from being spayed) and after checking with my vet, they said that wiping down the kitten with baby wipes was perfectly fine. I usually toweled them off afterwards too, even though they weren't very damp. I also had to wipe their bums a couple times just because it seemed that they just had some poopy residue left behind. They are now full-grown kitties that clean themselves pretty well now (although I am considering giving them an annual bath in the next week or so. They just feel and smell so nice afterwards!)
