confused confused Elijah is about 2 months old and has the run of our house. I also have a Rat Terrier and a Dorky. Both around 15 to 16 pounds. Problem is, Elijah has decided he likes the doggy food. If I catch him I move him away and give him his. I feed him wet and dry. I feed him 1/4 can, per meal. If he eats all of it I will give him a bit more. Plus I put about 1/4 cup of dry down for him too. So he gets plenty, seems to like what I am feeding him.
I cannot put the dogs dishes up high (he would just climb anyway), any ideal on how to get him to stay away from the doggy food? confusedconfused

We have a friend who has a one year old cat and a new puppy and she is dealing with the same issue. I've been telling her that the cat needs to eat cat food, but I haven't been sure what to tell her about solving the problem. The best solution I can think of is scheduled feeding, where the food is only put down at certain times of day. That way they would eat it all in a short amount of time and the bowls could be put away. Not sure if that would work or not since I've never had dogs. I'll be curious to see if you get any good advice.

Thank you Emily,
Not sure how it would work for my little guys. I feed them twice a day, half cup in the AM and half cup in the PM. Some days they are slower at eaten their food. But that does not stop Elijah, he will just walk up and start eating right out of their bowl whether they are eating or not.
The one food is chicken soup for the dog lovers soul, the other Innova Red Meat, for small breed dogs. I do not think a few bites of either would really hurt Elijah but I just do not want him thinking it is okay for him to eat this food.
I feed Elijah Wellness Kitten (wet and dry), Royal Canin babykat (dry and wet), and Blue Wilderness Kitten (wet). So I am sure it is not a need for better food. I think he is getting a good mix.
Tomorrow I will try and wait to feed Leo and Abbey while Eli is napping. I just do not want to throw off their schedule too much. Leo is almost 8 and Abbey will be 7 shortly afterwards.

Hunter is almost 2 and he still eats a few dog kibbles. He only will eat 1 or 2 pieces before I notice and take the food away. I really don't see it as an issue for Hunter because he does eat cat food. He is on a 95% wet diet and sometimes I think he just likes to crunch on something. If I see him eating, I take way the dog food. For the past week, I've been schedule feeding my dog, and its working out great.

I put the dog food up high when my dog isn't eating, so Hunter won't get to it. I'd put it in a cabinet, or in a tupperware, that way the cat can't get to it. Good Luck!

Thank you Hunter, though I had cats before when I had dogs I have never had one that wanted the dogs food. Leo and Abbey both ate their morning meals without Elijah trying to get it away from them. So maybe it was just a passing fancy.
Sometimes I believe I just over think things and then I get worried.
Elijah is eating his own food very well, drinking good too.
So since it is just a few bites before I get him I am not going to worry. Too Much, lol
