| Purred: Mon Jul 6, '09 12:28pm PST | | | | | | my neighbor's cat is a predominately brown tabby MC mix with a "frosting" of silver-white. what on earth do you call that? she's a female, so i guess it's some tri-color expression. i'm just used to finding the lighter color as an undercoat instead of as a sort of sparse but flowing "overcoat"...have got to get some pictures of Tia kitty. | | | | |

| Purred: Mon Jul 6, '09 2:22pm PST | | | | | | i don't think she's a torbie...there's no brindling or "melding" or "smears" or what-have-you i'm just calling it an "overcoat" because the predominately silver-white hair is longer and flowing-it's also finer. it's mostly on her ruff, tail, britches and belly, if that helps. (would those be lockets? unfamiliar with that term, but it sort of sounds right, intuitively.)
the tabby markings are basically "cat" brown (the duller grey rather than silver) and black. so is that even three colors, or are the silver-white and duller grey (brown) just different shadings of the same genetically determined color-like the different shades of orange and gold in my kaya?
who is, i might add, the most beautiful cat i've ever owned, if you factor in form, build, color and the whole megillah. she is a perfect example of a cat athlete. long, lean but powerfully built, with well-defined muscles and perfect proportions-look in catwikipedia under "hybrid vigor" and you'll see a picture of kaya. most attractive to me is those honey-amber eyes that go so very perfectly with her fur...she's also a ticked tabby, and in the sun she literally glistens... yes, i love my other cats dearly...but there is just something about my kaya. | Purred: Mon Jul 6, '09 2:28pm PST | | | | | | There are two colors in cats: black and red. Somehow those make up all the colors (well, it's mostly just shades of black, red only handles red and cream) There is also white, but that is a masking color and covers any other color/pattern. White can appear with any other color or pattern. So is the cat tabby with distinct white patches or tabby with long hairs tipped in white? Well, here are some links that I've found helpful (or more confusing)

Thank god Ragdolls only come in three colors (and their dilutes) and three patterns. Other cats don't make much sense to me.

| Purred: Mon Jul 6, '09 2:36pm PST | | | | | | about to check those sites, atrus-need to eat-but if i had to guess i'd say long hairs tipped in white.
but a quick question. if the only two cat colors (genetically) are red and black, with white as a masking (non)color-what do we mean when we say we have a cat that is tri-color? are we counting white as a color in this case-as with calicos? and tortoiseshells...i know they pretty much have to be female, and it has something to do with males can't be tri-color and fertile. but i know i've seen torties that were only two colors-had a tortie girl that was grey & bronze, looked basically like a grey cat with paint streaks of bronze.
sigh. | | | | |

But as a Maine Coon breeder--brown tabbies and brown tabby and whites really are brown. As are the aforementioned brown tabby purebred American Shorthairs. Trust me on this. Maybe we should start a thread on cat color genetics? It's a complicated subject, and we could all learn something.

| Purred: Mon Jul 6, '09 2:56pm PST | | | | | | Tricolors or calicos (being a calico vs a tortie with white depends on just how much white there is) do count the white as one of the three (tri) colors. White just works differently, genetically, than black or red. And tortie just means they have both black and red, they don't have to have any white. Red and Black are both on the X chromosome, so generally only females are torties (males can be, but those males are typically XXY). And the torbies are torties with tabby striping. The last link is pretty helpful and has lots of photos. | | | | |

Bumpurr
Diehard Dallas- Cowboy Fan! |
| Purred: Mon Jul 6, '09 3:15pm PST | | | | | | Here is a link to CFA Maine Coon standards and color descriptions.
http://www.cfa.org/breeds/standards/maine.pdf
I picked Maine Coon, as you indicated, the cat may be a MC mix, and Bumpurr's mother is a
registered show Maine Coon, with many championships in her background.
A white locket, which is a small patch of white, on the chest, is a dis-qualifing trait. If the cat has
a white locket on his/her chest, the majority of the time, they have the same white locket, almost
the same size and color, on their tummy, kinda near the bottom, of their back legs.
Altho it is faint, Bumpurr does have a white locket on his chest, and the same corresponding
faint white locket, the same size, on his tummy. This would dis-qualify him from being show Maine Coon.
Each breed, has different standards and color types/patterns.

| Purred: Mon Jul 6, '09 6:41pm PST | | | | | | Greenlee didn't flag anyone's posts -- I did.
The Catster moderators had hoped that Catsters who have previously been contacted by HQ (you know who you are) would remember to be friendly and kind, not rude and mean. The question was "Is my kitten Part Bengal???" A simple NICE answer would suffice, not a dissertation about every cat you have ever known.
I have contacted Greenlee and apologized for those who have forgotten that Catster is supposed to be fun and friendly. Those of you who wish to continue to "discuss" Catster members' heritage may start a new thread to critique the 192,887 Catster members in a "fun and friendly" manner.
