So I have a Siberian>He sheds like crazy all over things. I bought a Hoover EmPower bagless vacuum. I have noticed that it doesn't vacuum up much, no less the hair my baby leaves everywhere; you know like the wispy hair left behind when you accidentally step on their floofy tails? Most of our home has tile, but in the bedrooms and hallway we have short carpet. I want to know what you long haired cat owners use. What vacuum do you find works best? i don't want to have to repair my vacuum, esp if I can get another one for the same price that it would cost to repair one..

It's Stella. We are not exactly longhairs--the kittens and I are plushy"--but there are now 4 of us in a small trailer. Our person uses the Dyson vacuum with the Animal attachment [although we rarely get it together enough to do the attachment.] The system really sucks up cat hair and litter and dust and all that. It is expensive but it seems to really work. Before we had this, nothing seemed to work very well, and we used to have a long haired doggie who shed like you are talking about. Purrs to you!

Moms friend at work raves about her dyson getting up all the doggie hair! We have some old kinda crappy vacuum that doesnt really work that well. but we do have a Bissle Power Steamer for carpets and that works wonders. It pulls all the hair stuck deep down in the carpet and it kinda clumps it together on the top of the rug. Its kinda gross to puck up all the clumps but its way better to pick up the clumps then to have it all stuck in the rug. The first time mom and dad used it they SWORE they could have made another cat out of all the hair it pulled up. Jewel is terrified of the vacuum and the bissle but i like the bissle. I like to follow mom around, sniffing all the clumps of hair as she goes. The carpet might be wet but its warm - for a few minutes anway!

Horus I loved your response. Had quite the giggle. You just have to learn to live with the hair and love the one it comes from huh? I just wish I could find a vac that is not as expensive as a Dyson, but works really good. Almost thought of going back to an old fashioned bag vac.....

I have to say, the Dyson scared me (mommy, that is, not me, i'm brave) cause she ran it over what she though was a clean carpet, and... well the things that did come up. *rotflmfurryao*

sometimes, ignorance is a bliss.

Dyson also is good for people with alergies, since it's really good about keeping dust and mytes in the container.

Mom says that more than one pet person has recommended a Roomba to her because they are supposed to pick up dirt like nobody's business while being quieter than a vacuum. So that's what I would want mom to have, but she says I'll have to wait until she's done being a student for her to afford one, so for now I have to live with my terror of her vacuum. It's an older hoover model with a bag, and it does fine.

We did have issues with hair on furniture, and mom endlessly vacuuming so dad decided to go out and buy a couch based on Horus' specifications (MOL), only I don't like it as much as the old couch (black), because it takes so much rubbing against it before you can tell I live here shh... So nowadays I prefer rubbing my fur against the carpet. big grin

My parents would really love a Dyson, but they don't have $500 for a vacuum. They just got the Bissell Pet Hair Eraser, which has a nice rubber attachment that sucks up dog and cat hair really well. It works great for the price.

It's Stella. We have friends who have a Roomba and were not that pleased with it. You have to have a large area with very few obstacles for it to work very well, and the battery doesn't last that long. Plus their kitties are terrified of it [2] and/or want to take it apart [1]. Since I am not afraid of vacuum cleaners and love to take things apart, I bet I would find it fun. But there's too much stuff on the floor in here for one.
