Mocha, your post made me think to go and read the ingredients on our canned food again. But no fish was listed in their turkey and chicken cans. I think a lot of companies now are careful about not adding a meat or fish in without naming it because of some cats having allergies.

I remember reading about people saying that canned food led to more hyperthyroidism and asked my vet (he is feline only) about that and he said it had nothing to do with canned food as he has just as many cats with it that ate dry food. I didn't ask about fish though as I never fed fish.

Edison has an over-active thyroid, and although he's on Methimazole, I was also advised not to give him any fish or seafood because the mercury content can throw his thyroid even further out of whack. I get his food at this great organic pet shop in NYC (shout out to all you fans of Whiskers NYC!), and the staff there is incredibly knowledgable. They also told me to be sure and check the ingredients, because even a chicken or turkey flavored cat food can have fish in it.

Of course, Edison is a unique cat because he actually doesn't like seafood, so before I knew all of this, if I gave him a seafood flavored canned food, he'd turn his nose up at it. So that made it pretty easy, since all I have to do now is just check my ingredients before I put the can in my cart.

Oddly enough, and I'm not saying this is the thing to do, BUT--when the crew of NC kitties got here, the very oldest one eats ONLY fish based products (she is 14) and is in fantastic condition with no physical issues at all. Because GG had a very, very bad kittenhood Meowma's breeder friend never pressured her to eat anything else, and Meowma says she can do the same here. The rest of us are jealous because we only get fishy things a couple of times a week.

@Zack - I remember reading about the cans and hyperthyroidism as well. They think it has something to do with the lining used in the pop-top cans. However, there's a million other things they think it's linked to within the home. I think the big problem is that it's only been the last generation or two where cats are starting to live full time inside the home. Even 20 years ago, most cats were indoor/outdoor. It's amazing the diseases and syndromes that are appearing in cats now!
