I love scooting on my mom's carpet. She took me to the vet and the vet said it was either worms or my anal glands...They squeezed everything out of my anal glands and treated me for worms but I still scoot! I have a bit of a problem getting all of the poo off my bum when going to the litter box and scooting gets all of it off but on the carpet. My mom was giving us Nutro dry and changed a while ago to Science Diet Sensitive Stomach thinking it was the food, but I continue to scoot. My poop is a bit soft and stinkier than my sister's poo. In the past, mom took me to a different vet and they said that it may be an infection so they gave me antibiotics but I still scoot. What can I do to stop scooting. Mom is moving to a new place with much lighter carpet, which means if I scoot, the poo will show up much more! Help!
he might have a flood allergy! Phil has allergies and be was on science diet send. Stomach when I got him from the shelter and the first thing the vet said when I brought him in for diarreah was to get him off science diet and get him a better quality grain free food. If your sweeties food has grains, he might not be digesting the grains and they could be irratating his bottom on the way out, or an itchy bottom is how he's reacting to the allergy.
There are tons of options for grain free foods in all sorts of flavors. Wellness Core, taste of the wild, natural balance duck and green pea, natures variety instinct, evo, merrick b.g., and tons more. They sjould be labeked grain free on the bag. Phil is allergic to duck, and really can't have any fowl as a primary protien so he's on natures variety instinct Rabbit, and is doing much better, but if your kitty doesn't have a protien allergy, I would just try anything grain free first!
Better food probably will help but some kitties do not clean as good as others. Is he able to reach the area okay? My kitty is 14 pounds, she is a bit over weight but can still reach. Even if they clean back there, if you notice there is still dried poopies....I take a cottenelle wipie and moisten it a bit more then it is with warm water and help the cleaning process. Chloe doesn't mind it, she actually holds her bum up for me to clean it. She makes a nasty face when she cleans back there so I think she would rather me do it. Callie on the other hand does not like this but we have only had her for 3 weeks so she is not use to it.
Good luck with the food switch, we are switching to all grain wet, and no more lite food. The light actually has more carbs. I know what carbs do to me so..... For food ideas read the Cat Food Nutrition Thread, it is pretty new so it should be at the top. Great info and it convinced me that Hills Prescription is what is making my baby not lose weight anymore. They have a formula in one of the links, I think the catinfo one. The formula figues the calories needed to lose weight at a healthy rate.
Good luck, Nicole , Chloe and Callie
I say start with a better food but if that does not work there is other thing to try. It is so rare you don't needed to try it until you have been grain free for a month. It is one of the worst allergies to manage in a way. It is also VERY rare. It could be a cat litter alllergy . I have one. I use Feline Pine because of it. However, there are other choices such as Yesterday's News, World's Best, etc. Generally it just has to be clay free as that is usually the problem. In your case it would be making your butt itch. In my case it makes my hair fall out and is itchy. My vet has very large practice and only 3 cats in his practice are allergic to litter. One of his techs said she was the first cat she remembered allergic to litter. It looks so weird listed on the front of my chart but .
PS - after rereading what I wrote...just letting all know I do not run after the kitties for a good wipen. lol My one cat just needs it once in awhile and the new one is very clean but I rescued her from a shelter so she was not very clean overall.
just wanted to clarify.
I can clean my bottom but it's when I poo that it is soft and sticks to me so I scoot then clean to not have to eat my own poo. I will try the new food and if that doesn't help then I may have to try the non-clay litter. In the meantime, my mom will have to catch me after I go to the litterbox to clean me before I sit down and scoot on the carpet. Thanks a bunch for the advice and I will keep you posted!
Thanks for all of your help! I have switched from Science Diet to grain free canned food (I still eat my sister's dry food but that's grain free too) I have only scooted twice in the past week and my mom's been using baby wipes on my bottom when i come out of the litter box so that helps too!
