As some know before the recall I had switched both Sylvester and Stinkers over to Chicken Soup Dry Adult Formula. At first both absolutely loved it, now once again Stinky is refusing to eat it and has been getting into the outdoor cats (neighborhood strays) meow mix. Which has been causing him to throw up.

This is the SECOND grain-free cat food that Stinky has done this with, first Taste of the Wild both venison and canyon river. Now, Chicken soup. I don't know the reason why he is doing this but it is become very stressful and taking a lot of money out of the budget. Any thoughts or suggestions on this, on why he could be doing this?

As of right now, I am thinking that perhaps he just doesn't like the grain-free diet. I am thinking of two brands...either NutroMax or Holistic Select. If anyone would care to give more information about them other than what I can find on their websites, that'd be awesome and greatly appreciated! kitty

Thanks!
From and stressed cat mom.eek

Momma is a Pet Nutrition Specialist for Nutro and would be happy to share some light.

We eat Nutro Max at our house, and all three of us do very well on it. It's yummy! It's all natural, and a large bag lasts us a few months. Our skin and fur are very shiny and soft, and since we all demand to be petted, momma loves petting us. The glucosamine is really good for our joints too, especially since Kiki and Jack are old, but I didn't tell you that.

Feel free to learn more here if you like. smile

Did you know that both these foods were recalled recently. How about Wellness grain free canned, or if you must have dry I found this pet food the other day which looks ok. It is called Great Life http://www.doctorsfinest.com/category_s/55.htm
Natures Variety is another brand
In my opinion, I would stay away from Nutro.
Google is your friend lol!!

First, contact your pet store and see what type of guarantee they have. They may take back your bag of food.

After trying lots of samples. We have bought several different ones too. My cats prefer some grain. They like oatmeal, rice, barley, and millet. We tried some with tapioca, peas, white and sweet potatoes. But they do not like them as much. Maybe your do not like barley. Your crew may likes rice or oatmeal ones.

My like the Y shaped kibble. Right now Cookie is eating Holistic Select Duck. Brownie and Candie are eating Holistic Select Anchovy, Sardine and Salmon. No corn, wheat or yeast like in Meow Mix or Nutro. A almost 6 lb bag HS fish is almost gone in 7 weeks between the two of them. I also have Wellness Indoor Health, Chicken with barley. We sampled the Wellness Indoor twice before I bought it. Brownie and Cookie are eating that too. All of these are Wellpet products and now all made in the Holistic Select plant in Indiania. I believe the Holistic Select Chicken is too high of phosphorus, 1.79, which I found out after buying one bag. Brownie and Cookie hated it. Only Candie ate the Holistic Select Chicken. Holistic Select has samples too. Visit them on Facebook to get your free sample and coupons. Call the stores in your area to see if they have free samples. I have written or call the companies directly and ask for samples. I'm still trying to get my cats to finish a bag each of the Nature's Variety Instinct Rabbit and Turkey & Duck. I just wanted to get a rotating variety so they do not get tired of what they eatting. I even bought a bag of Earthborn grain free fish one. They will not eat it. I sprinkled the BB shaped kibble over the other fish kibble and they eat around it. Spoiled brats! I'm done with the grain free ones. Another one they liked but since it had a little higher in phosphorus so I bought Wellness was California Natural Chicken & Brown Rice. No barley in it. Also P&G buying the company did not bother me.

Wellpet Products - money back guarantee. Your cats hate it, return it with the receipt. Take the Pet Parenting quiz to get your printable $5 coupon on Holistic select. I just wish Petco still carried it my area to get a sale price and coupons to get it cheaper.

And no, Holistic Select has not been recalled. Shadow show me this on the FDA recall list. Only one type of dog food made at Diamond SC plant for Welness was recalled. The only cat food recalled was Kirkland sold by Costco.

Here is the link to the FDA for recalls on pet food. Remember, I'm from the Show Me state. This goes back to Dec. 2008 and no Holistic Select or Nutro for that fact.

http://www.fda.gov/AnimalVeterinary/SafetyHealth/RecallsWit hdrawals/default.htm

I would have been out here telling you if the brand I'm feeding my cats was recalled. Just like I'm telling you the Holistic Select chicken is not good for older cats. I think a kibble with oatmeal or rice as the carb source need to be looked at. Maybe others would know of them.

Actually Shadow, Stinker-Finn-Franscis was feeding cat food not dog food. So the only recalled cat food recently was Kirkland.

Here some other brands that might work: By Nature Seven Seafood Platter, Blue Basic, Authority Adult Sensitive Solutions. Precise Foundation is another one that might work too. We have tried The Precise Holistic Complete and it does not agree with New kitty Candie. We hve tries Blue Wilderness too. But too high of Phosphorus to feed everyday. I'd like to try By Nature with a phosphorus of 1.1%

I wrote to Nutro about the amount of phosphorus in their Max kibble since it was a secret and they did not post it on their website. They were really good numbers too. But why hide them?
Max Cat Indoor Adult Chicken Dry is Approx- .95%
Max Cat Adult Roasted Chicken Dry and The Max Cat Adult Salmon Dry is Approx 1.00%
Max Cat Senior Dry- is Approx 1.00%
Max Cat Indoor Wight Control Dry is Approx .94%

Here is the info on HS:
The Holistic Select Duck is 1.13
the Holistic Select Fish is 1.37

I put Authority down but they are not a very friendly company. No way to contact them from their website. It gives me a bad feeling even if their food is more affordable. (No way to contact them for the phosphorus amount.) I keep bring up the phosphorus because of the age of Stinker-Finn-Franscis. I wrote to Blue and as of yet, no response to phosphorus amounts for Basics.

Thank you everyone for the information! I have been reading and hearing, many good things about the Holistic Select and I am finding myself leaning towards that brand. The nearest place that carries this food though is an hour drive, one way. So, the transition to a new cat food may need to wait a few weeks until I get my new debt card in the mail. That will certainly make life simpler, always have been nervous though of CC or DC, due to so much identity theft. Hubby convinced me though, that it will make our lives simpler.

Anyway, I have read many reviews on Nutro, so they still have my attention. I guess I have a few weeks to decide. The thing that concerns me are the grains that are contained in Nutro, as Brownie mentioned it seems to me that Holistic have better grains.

Thank you, Brownie as well for the other food suggestions. I will certainly take a look at the websites.

@ Shadow- To clarify things for the sake of a disagreement. Yes, I have been using Chicken Soup Dry for my cats and Taste of the Wild for me dog. The local pet store that I get my pet food from, checked every one of their bags during the recall. All of the bags they had in stock were all clear. So, no worries and I appreciate the concern greatly smile
