My cat Marshall was diagnosed a while back with bladder crystals and a urethral blockage. We had him on the Prescription URO food from the vet but its SOOOO expensive. We just recently bought Pro Plan from Purina Urinary Tract Health. Has anyone had good or bad experience with this food? Do you recommend I keep him on RX food or do you think this is ok? I also supplement with soft food for urinary tract health per vets advice.

The only way to avoid urinary problems is to keep the cat completely flushed out. You don't need prescription food to do this, but you do need a canned or raw diet. Kibble keeps a cat in a permanent state of dehydration and can lead to many health problems, especially in the urinary system. Switch to a canned only diet, add a little water to it, and you shouldn't have any more trouble.

We used to feed a combination of canned food and dry, and switched to canned-only several months ago. Since the switch, neither of my cats drink much water at all anymore, yet they use the litterbox just as frequently. It's anecdotal evidence so take it for what you will, but this observation reinforces my belief that an all-wet diet is better for them.
