There are four of us and Mom spends about $120 a month on food. A $27 bag of Eagle Pack Holistic Chicken Meal & Rice kibble lasts about a month. And we each usually get about 2 ounces of canned (Avoderm and Merrick) each day. The others used to eat Wellness Kitten kibble, which was more expensive, but my tummy couldn't handle it.
I'm not actually sure... I would have to track Church's eating for a while to see because I'm not sure how long a bag of food actually lasts. Church eats A LOT! I feed him Wellness kitten food but I also got a free bag of Nature's Variety Instinct Rabbit with a coupon so I have been mixing the two. I usually buy a smaller bag of the Wellness which costs about $11 a bag.
I can't reccomend buying bigger size bags of Wellness enough. We used to go through the 2.2 lbs in about 2 weeks, and it felt like we always went to the pet store. It's not that the 5 lbs. bag lasts a lot more, but since you're buying food only once a month, the packaging cost is reduced. That is, buying two small bags @ $13 a bag (tax and all) vs. buying one medium bag @ $20 does make a sizable difference in cost. Ditto with buying the occasional 5.5 oz can instead of a 3 oz if it's a flavor mom knows I really love.
Mom would buy the 12 lbs dry food bags, but there is only one of me, and no storage space for it. If and when we move to a bigger place and we get a second cat, you bet that's what she will do.
Spot and Harvey's mom, I don't know how feasible it is for you, but Wellness does make 12 oz cans of wet food too, you can usually buy them on the web. That you live in Japan might still make it prohibitively expensive to get them shipped, but you might want to look into a bigger size can. Say you're feeding 4 cats and each gets 3 oz of food. A large can of the same food will mean less packaging, and therefore less cost to you. Say a 3 oz can of the food you want to feed costs a dollar, and a 12 oz costs 2 (I'm just guesstimating), and you'd have to buy 4 so each cat gets some, and you get the idea (i.e., the large can is a better investment).
Lotus and Bamboo eat Innova Evo dry (1/2 cup each a day.) Now and then I mix in Wellness Core or Merrick Before Grain Salmon flavor. They like the Evo the best though and it is the cheapest of the three.
6.6 lb. bag of Innove Evo=$16.00/month
2 lb. bag of Wellness Core=$7.49 (lasts 6 weeks or so)
3.3 lb. bag of Merrick BG=$11.25 (probably will last 2+ months)
One local pet specialty store gives 3 oz samples of dry foods so I picked up Solid Gold Indigo Moon (grain free) and Katz n Flocken (lamb flavor) to mix it up sometimes.
The kittens share a can of wet each day. Sometimes 3oz, sometimes 5 oz. Merrick is 97 cents for 5.5 oz. Wellness is 99 cents for 3oz. Innova Evo wet is $1.19 for 5.5 oz. Natural balance is 79 cents for 3oz. Sometimes we get California Natural or Castor and Pollux. We use coupons andloyalty cards. Pet Supermarket often has $2-$5 store coupons in the paper. They let us use other coupons with it.
S'Wheet litter is $9.99 now. I usually find $1 coupons and hit a sale for $7.50 (Publix) a few weeks ago. We use about 2- 13 lb. boxes a month. I mix in Feline Pine clumping too. $4.50 for a box per month+.
Wow Mom never figured out what she spends on us until this thread. She spends between $120 - $175 a month on us 3 cats and one dog! That includes mostly canned food for us (wellness & merricks mostly) with occasional evo dry. Lyra the dog gets 1/2 can (EVO) and 1/2 dry (solid gold) plus a nupro supplement. That prices also includes litter, dr elsey's cat litter attractant, treats, marrow bones, occasional raw food and 2 prescriptions. Boy we are more expensive than mom thought! This doesn't even include vet bills! Good thing Mommy loves us so much!
I spend $50/month on cat food for 1 10-lb. cat. Brice eats 6 oz. of Wellness Chicken per day (2 3-oz. cans). I could also transition to Nature's Variety raw medallions for $30/month (chicken and turkey variety).
Meowma is reading this thread and is very glad neither one of us like canned cat food of any kind, after seeing the bill. We go through about 10 pounds of Nutro Indoor Natural (15-17.00) about every three weeks, and about one 1/2 30 pound pails of litter, then there's treats-- all together we guess it's about $45 or so. Not too bad.
