|First I want to say hello. I'm a military wife stationed with my husband at Yokota Air Base just outside Tokyo. Right now our family is the "three" of us - him, myself and our Border Collie, Haven. Haven, like any Border Collie, is active but as he approaches 1 year old, he's mellowing (well as much as can be expected for his breed). I've wanted a cat for quite some time, the problem is/was my mother is severely allergic (so no kitty when I was young) and I have allergies to them too (but I am starting allergy shots soon). Even without allergy shots, they're not excessive, just uncomfortable.
So I am looking for some advice over the next few months so that I can best make a decision about adding a kitten/cat to our family. Someone mentioned here, unlike back "home" in the USA, the idea of humane societies is vastly different.
1) While individuals within a breed differ personality wise, what breeds "tend" to be the most accepting when integrating in a home with an active dog? (Haven would not be allowed unsupervised, but I don't want a kitten or cat freaking because he suddenly decides to run laps through the house) A friend of mine back in the US recommended a Maine Coon as he's encountered many wonderful temperaments within the breed (which caused him to get them too). While I love the looks of the Maine Coon and the Norwegian Forest Cat, the personality is what is going to matter most in the end.
2) Where would I begin looking for said breed? Sadly, I have not learned much Japanese which makes communicating rather difficult for us.
3) Male or Female? Either way the cat will be altered. After being altered do males still spray? I've read yes and no (I'm guessing it depends on the cat). I also read somewhere that neutered males have a lesser tendency to give off the allergen I have a hard time with. I don't know if that's true, but it is something I read and was curious if there's any truth?
Like I said, I have a few months to make an educated decision. Haven is on quarantine until the end of September, so no kitty cat to come home until after that. But I don't like jumping into anything dealing with a living breathing creature without a lot of forethought and knowledge to base my decision on. So any thoughts/advice/information is more than welcome as this will be our first cat.
Thanks in advance!
