GO!

What kind of kitties are we?

If you are wondering what is the right cat for you, this is the place to be. In this introductory forum we talk about topics such as breed vs. mix, size, age, grooming, breeders, shelters, rescues as well as requirements for exercise, space and care. No question is too silly here. This particular forum is for getting and giving helpful, nice advice. It is definitely not a forum for criticizing someone else's opinion, knowledge or advice. This forum is all about purring and learning.

Since I have no idea what types of cats any of us are I could not post in the breed specific forums. I was wondering what type of cats do we look like. I am talking about all of us in my cat family.

I'd say you're all domestic short hairs (aka moggies)--generic cats of mixed genetic hertiage. I'm a bit intrigued by the male labeled as "tortoiseshell"--he's not quite a tortoiseshell, but I can't figure out what his coloration is. Or maybe he is a variation of tortoiseshell that makes his black coat have areas that look reddish. Genetically speaking, it is almost (but not entirely) impossible to find a male calico or tortoiseshell. Anyway, you have quite a family there! Enjoy!

If you do not know both the mother and the father's breed, your cat is a domestic cat. That's the cat equivalent of being called a mutt if you're a dog (nothing wrong with it, I find that mutts are the best kind there is, whether they are human, feline, or canine wink). There are three types of domestic cats: short haired, medium haired, and long haired. You would belong to whatever group of domestic cats makes your coat length its principal feature.

There are also many groups on catster that are not color or breed specific that you can join and have fun in, by the way.

Leila- I marked Shadow done as Tortie because he is similar to my friends tortie. I am not good with breeds/ colors of cats anyway.

Boris-Thanks, All except Josie are short haired. Josie is either medium or long haired

If Josie has a thick and plushy undercoat, but her hair does not look particularly long anywhere except for the butt, then she is probably a medium haired like my sisfur cat Gracie. Gracie looks like a shorthair at first glance, but when you pet her you can tell her coat is very thick and long, it just does not stick out very much other than on her paws and butt. shh

If Josie hair is visibly and clearly long, as well as her coat very thick, she is a long-haired cat.

Hmmm..I think you'd better re-examine Shadow, who I bet is in fact a girl kitty -- definitely a tortoiseshell which are 99.999% female. If you see this : under the tail, it's a boy. Upside down ! is a girl. Don't mistake a little fluffiness for balls, I'm talking about the actual openings here.

Whatever the gender (see, I always think of "Josie and the Pussycats" when hearing that name shh), I would think that he is longhaired, due to the length of hair on his face. But I am going just by the pictures you put up. As I pointed in another thread, sometimes pics can be deceiving: Gracie's fur falls somewhere between a short hair and a medium hair domestic cat, even the three vets she has had so far couldn't agree on it. Given how thick and plushy her fur is, and how much of a feather butt she has, she's definitely not a shorthair, but you can't tell those features at all from looking at a picture, you can only tell in person. laugh out loud

Momma cat is blue with white, Shadow is a tortishell, and most likely a girl, as torti's are, as BooBoo said, 99.999% girls, males are very very rare, and *if* Shadow is a boy, he is sterile, the black one is a tuxedo, and the orange ones are red mackerel tabby's. big grinbig grinbig grinbig grinbig grinbig grinbig grinbig grin

Their breed, being of unknown parentage, as in, not from registered breed cats, would be as everyone said, domestic shorthairs. big grinbig grinbig grinbig grinbig grinbig grinbig grinbig grin

They are very very pretty kittens, and I am so envious, mol, you live in North Dakota. wave
