Choosing the Right Cat

GO!
If you are wondering what is the right cat for you, this is the place to be. In this introductory forum we talk about topics such as breed vs. mix, size, age, grooming, breeders, shelters, rescues as well as requirements for exercise, space and care. No question is too silly here. This particular forum is for getting and giving helpful, nice advice. It is definitely not a forum for criticizing someone else's opinion, knowledge or advice. This forum is all about purring and learning.

I've only had one kitty previously, a rescue DSH girl. Unfortunately, I really, really disliked her confused So I suppose I'm a little more particular to males, but it's hard to tell. Isis was adopted at 1yr of age, so her personality and quirks were already set. Kinako, on the other had, came home at about 9wks and is constantly being given kisses and cuddles from us. He's definitely more affectionate and, whenever we talk about the possibility of adopting again, we always have males in mind smile

I prefer boys!

I asked this question on Twitter and the answers I got were about 80% in favor of boys, those responders saying boys are more lovey.

Being boy cats ourselves , we won't disagree with Charlie, but can anyone explain the reasons that boy cats are more loving??? shrug

Yeah I do love my boy cats. We got Melody (of course we love her too) because we heard Male/female combos bonded closer. Well its true because her and Toby cuddle and groom eachother (very sweet) but she just isn't like the boys.

So if I had to choose a Male or a Female I would choose another Male.

Well I don't know who on here is a meowme or Pepaw? but I think that sometimes male pets bond with female caretakers more and female pets bond with male caretakers more, but this is just generic Idea I really don't think you can say one idea covers all scenarios. I think even though pets are different species they may also still be aware that our species have male and females and act accordingly to that idea. Since we do give off sex hormones and I think that is what they pick up. I know my cat choice me, and he is a male. Though he is my only so I can't say what I like most or if I even have a preference. I think if you let them pick you, you will always end up with a winner.

When I was a baby (I was born to a feral mother and rescued by a dog) I was very quiet and lazy. I liked to lay on people and that was about it. When I hit about the four month stage it was like someone lit my tail on fire and I became an absolute psycho. I love my mousies! I fetch them! I walk on a leash! I follow Human everywhere, 'bark at birds'... I'm the kind of cat that "whoever says cats sleep 18 hours a day never met Chey!" I was never a "pet me, hold me!" kind of cat until about a year ago. Now I go to Human about once an hour (at least!) for cuddles and pets. Cats can change, Human has learned.

Kamala, one of her previous cats, was very skittish and quiet, but lazy over all when she wasn't hiding.

Males, to us, seem to be more laid back. Hech, the only playing Alex ever did was chewing on a ponytail. big laugh

Just depends on the cat. shrug

Crazy traveling Cat Lady with SIX cats now big laugh

We have 5 girls and 1 boy! Previously (the 3 that all passed within a few years - it was 2 boys, 1 girl)...

Bonnie - adopted at 10 - now 14 and the "Queen" of the house LOVES treats from the table (bad previous meowmom taught her and HUBBY reinforces it shock ) very laid back, BATH MAT sized cat and very loving. Loves to sit or lay NEXT to people, but NOT a lap cat - she is a Norweign Forest

Olive - adopted at 7 now 11 - Didn't come from a good home situation. Though I call her Olive, I love Olive she still has periods of acting like she was previously abused :-( She really is a sweet, talky Tortie that can only take so much love before she has to get away from it! Hides in a cube most days, comes out at night for "Daddy" walk me to my food dish time, and Meow Mom pets and purrs.

Dora - adopted at 10 turned 11 April 1. Once she got over the grief of losing her other Meow Mom has sucked right up on me laugh out loud
She would spend 24/7 on my lap, laying on my pillow next to my head and snuggling with me IF she could! Loves to be brushed, Loves to be LOVED! Chocolate Point or Seal Point Himalyian Simease

KC (Dora's sister) - adopted at 10 turned 11 April 1. Loves to be brushed, BUT is more stand-off-ish than her sister Dora. Neither are the "talky, whiney Himalyian Siamese type TY Lord"! KC has found LOVE with her Meow Dad and lays on his chest for her pets (HEY someone has to choose HIM over Meow Mom!!!! wave )

Lucky Streak - I'm the ONLY BOY cat! Rescued at 5 months, now almost 7 - One big lug of 20 pounds of loving budda belly! Snores like a real MAN (learned from his meow dad??).

Went after Dora and KC at first, but someone had to put them in the pecking order so I guess HE was the "dude"?? VERY laid back but the only one that WILL attempt to sneak out the door if you don't have eagle eyes on him! Was a previous semi-feral so perhaps why he attempts escapes, or eats himself silly sometimes - Can be petted too much then he'll "gnaw" on your hand... Silly boy kitty I'm a black and white short-haired something.

Sandy Sandia - Rescued at 10 weeks, she lived near death for almost 6 months. wave MY birthday was TODAY!!! I turned 4 BIG years old! AND I'm the MOST loving cat my meow mom has EVER had cheer
I'm a talky checkerboard, Monet Painting colored kitty and I LOVE LOVE pets, giving kisses, laying on laps, and chasing ALL the "old" cats to stir them up now and then laugh out loud Meow Mom thinks I'm the most loving because she saved my life, and I saved her life (oh I let her save me cuz she NEEDED another kitty and didn't know it).

So BIG paws up for GIRLS here! I tell you - Forget the coverter box and T.V.!! With 6 cats that travel and live with us in our 5th wheel - it's never a dull moment and THEY are more fun to watch than anything on the "boob tube" laugh out loud

So, depends on personality (which changes almost every 6 months it seems hahaha) - and perhaps some has to do with their upbringing and/or their Breed.

I've found tortie's are "talkers", Calico cats have CAT-A-Tude, Black and Whites are Laid Back, etc... Then again, I always thought Siamese were "whiney, talkers" and the 2 we recently fostered (MMAO) then adopted, open their mouths and NOTHING comes out - They ONLY "talk" in a tiny Squeek of a voice in the car, Cuz then they have something to SAY laugh out loud

Love them all!

Can't say I have males more lovey than females. Right now we are two females (Emma and Charmaine), and three males (Louis, Pete and Buddy).

Emma and Louie are littermates, they love each other and love being petted having tummy rubs and being brushed. They adopted me at 2 months, and were hand raised by a tech at an animal clinic where they were left when they were two weeks old.

Pete will allow you to pet him, but not much of a lap cat. I adopted him as a stray - he was living at my aunt's house, so I don't know too much about his background.

Charmaine thinks all humans want to do is pet her, play with her and kiss and hug her. LOVES to sit on your lap, sleep with you, watch you get dressed, etc. She is a little flirt and will rub up against any man who comes to the house, including guests and repairmen.

Buddy showed up when Charmaine came into heat in January (she has since been spayed). Very afraid of me at first, now will roll over for tummy rubs and "makes biscuits" (kneads) with all four paws. TALKS AND TALKS......and wants to know where I am at all times.

I agree, it differs with each and every cat, even within breeds. But I love all of my furballs.......they make my life brighter!!!!

The New Orleans Kitties

P.S. Bonnie's mom - Bless You for adopting so many older kitties - often they are left in favor of kittens and younger catshug

Mom's decision to adopt only males is a question of responsibiliy mor than anything else.

Mom HATES to be responsible so she never wanted an OOPS! with a female. (Knowing mom she would get the female cat that starts estress -i think thats how it's spelled - at 4 months and then gets out and gets preggers). At least with males (who are all fixed and were all fixed at 5 - 6 months not a day later) if an OOPS! did happen she would not be responsible for the kittens.

Selfish ?? YES. But it works for her. So we are all males and are very thank full that mommy likes us just the way we are (even though Desert is crazy).

Our mom always wanted to know the answer to that question also so when it was time to purchase us, she picked a girl. Then she thought she may be lonely so she got a boy from the same breeder two weeks younger.
Previous to us, she had a male cat and previous to him she had a female... The female was more loving. And as far as us.. we are loving but in different ways. I will cuddle up in bed with meowmy but only in the crook of her legs, my brofur prefers to sleep in his bed on moms bed thats the way its been since kittenhood.
So.. the turn out in this situation is both are loveing it just depends on how they are brought up, and their personalities - just like Hoomans - some are loving, some are not, some are weird, some are not, some are psyco, some are not, some are mean, some are not. Some are white, some are black, some are orange, some are not. hehehhehe Thanks for listenin to me. Now let me do my happy dance and it goes like this.snoopy
