Namerovsky

From a- distinguished- line of tabby- cats

Haaaaaaaa what a great thread!

Before I went to pick up a cat, I had in mind what I wanted: girl cat, graceful, elegant, maybe medium or long hair, black or a pretty calico. Kind of mysterious. (Like my cat who had died before.) Maybe a kitten.

Well, I got there. There was a black Oriental who was quite exotic looking and friendly. But then this silly tabby-and-white guy kept running up to us, followed us around the shelter, and jumped into my boyfriend's arms. I went to the other end of the shelter to talk to the adoption lady and look around, and all of the sudden, the same little guy was under my hand on a table. It was pretty obvious that it was meant to be, that he knew he wanted to go home with us. He picked us, not the other way around.

So we did the paperwork and everything and popped him into the box and the car. And that was that.

At the beginning, we called him "Shunra" - which is Aramaic for "The Cat" - it was the name we'd picked out for the original pretty, elegant cat we had in mind. But this guy turned out to be such a clown, quite clumsy, and silly. So even though he is listed at the first vet visit as Shunra, it never really stuck.

We started calling him "Namer" (Nah-mare) because that means "Tiger" in Hebrew...I'd come home and call out, "Where's my little 'Namer'?" and he'd come running.

It was a little ironic considering how spoiled and clumsy he was. And somehow, he became "Namerovsky" - sort of like a Russian tragic fool in some Dostoyevsky story or something. Strange name, but it fits and it stuck. When we need something shorter, we yell, "Nems."

And that should be the most ridiculous cat name story yet. It's embarrassing a little every time we have to tell someone his name...

Paine

I tend to live- up to my name

Sorry it's so bit long, I'll break into parts

A brief history of me:

I grew up with having kitties, in fact I had had a cat my entire life - the first being a present to my parents a few months after I was born. While living at home we had 4 cats (all saved from either the streets or shelters), with only one passing away - the one I grew up with (the hardest thing ever!)(the remaining 3 my mum has on Caster^^). Anyways I moved away to go to college and during my years there I missed having a kitty every day, but knew I couldn't afford one while having to pay tuition and life expenses. One thing led to another and I found myself moving to Australia to be with my boyfriend. A few months after I moved here I told my boyfriend that I wanted a cat - he said "no - never"...but I knew I'd eventually get my way.

Getting a cat:

After living here for a year I finally found myself compulsively searching the internet for cats and anything cat related. I'd literally lay in bed and cry cause I wanted a kitty so bad. My boyfriend was always at work all day and I was home...all alone, as my job is casual and usually has me working nights and weekends. I found I had my heart set on a purebred Burmese, I had even contacted a few breeders in the area. My boyfriend eventually saw resistance was futile, but convinced me a $500 cat was too much at the time, so I suggested adoption. After searching through some shelters with online listings I came across one I really liked...however when I called to meet her she had already been adopted. I continued searching but no cats peaked my interest. My boyfriend was insistent it still be very much a kitten and I wanted it to be a girl. I then remembered the Vet down the road sometimes had signs up that they had kittens up for adoption. We gave them a ring and they had two female kittens. We immediately drove down the road and I was shown their two babies. The younger one was a blue/gray & cream/white tabby who was batting a ball around her glass enclosure when I went to hold her. Her precious green eyes looked up at me when I held her and my heart melted. The white that underlined her eyes was so gorgeous! After holding her for a while they had me hold their other female kitten. She was a bit older, they called her a tortie but she looked more like a calico to me. She was fast a sleep in her bed and her golden eyes looked up at me in annoyance as I held her. She growled and let out a hiss. I ended up adopting the tabby.

Complications:

My kitty came with ear mites which she had gotten from her kitty mummy, so I was instructed to give her ear medicine 2 times a day. When they took her back for her release check up she had a fever so they asked to keep her for a few hours to see if she was okay. My boyfriend and I were fine with that as we needed to get her kitty stuff anyways. So we went out shopping and while out the vet rang my mobile. My kitty had just had diarrhea and they wanted to keep her over the weekend (this was on a Saturday, so I wouldn't get her until Monday). My heart broke as I agreed - I just wanted her to be healthy. Two hours later we were home and eating lunch and my phone rang again - The head nurse had taken my kitties temp again and she fine and deemed healthy enough to come home on the condition I made a free check-up for Monday (which I gladly did).

Naming Her:

During my compulsive-obsession-with-getting-a-cat stage I managed to talk with my boyfriend about hypothetical names for a cat. He insisted he'd get to name it if we got one...and he wanted to name it Ninja! I said "No way are we naming a girl kitty Ninja..." so we went through a bunch of his favourite mangas, movies, and video games listing off female characters until we came across Paine, which is from Finale Fantasy X-2 - He liked it and for some reason it was acceptable to me.

Paine's History:

After taking her to her check up on that following Monday I was told why Paine had been put up for adoption: Her kitty mummy had had 3 litters in a row, so all of them (including her kitty mummy) were confiscated, vaccinated, desexed and put up for better homes. Paine has been spoiled beyond my boyfriend's belief since we got her - we've spent about $1k on just toys and accessories in the past 2 months - He's learning how much happiness a kitty can bring and how much fun they are to spoil!

Sabre

Protective Free- Spirit

Purred: Mon Jul 20, '09 8:41am PST
I got Sabre in October of 2007.
My boyfriend's cat Tommy had died 3 months earlier and he was missing him and lonely. I found an ad at the university for a cat who was at the shelter. I called the number and it turned out this girl brought the cat to her dorm at the university, got in trouble, cat got kicked to the shelter, been there for 3 months and was going to be put down so a worker at the shelter took him home to foster but needed to give him up for some reason.
When we went to see him for the first time he scratched my boyfriend from eye to mouth and we decided to take him home lol. The shelter usually charged $130 for a unaltered adult cat but because he was on death row they gave him to us for $50. They were calling him Dagger but we changed his name to Sabre because he is as fast as the jets.

Rodney

PLAY PLAY PLAY

Purred: Mon Jul 20, '09 8:48am PST
We got Rodney in June of 2008. I was taking the garbage out and heard these squeeks and i went to investigate and found 3 kittens huddling around a dead mommy behind the garbage. It took 2 days but i managed to catch them. We took them to the vets and they were only about 1-2 weeks old. There are alot of stray and feral cats behind the apartment building in this wooded area and we thought they came from there. The vet said what probably happened was the mom had these 3 kittens and someone took them in a box to the garbage.
There was 1 all black male and 2 black and white females.
We contacted the shelter. agreed to foster them until they were 12 weeks old and give them to the shelter.
1 named Rodney out of the blue. He was the runt and it seemed to fit. We kept him because he loved Sabre so much.
The two females we named Scrappers (always begged for table scraps) and Freckles (she had black freckles on her white fur).

Emily

**SPLORT!!**

Purred: Mon Jul 20, '09 7:18pm PST
Our three cats came to us when we were least expecting it...sorry in advance for the long post, I love telling their stories...

Belle and Sebastian are littermates and will be 2 years old in August. They were born under a bush in a friend of mine's backyard. She was feeding the mama feral kitty the whole time she was pregnant, and when she finally had her babies in the late summer, my friend started asking if anyone wanted a cat (or two, or more)

My then-fiance (now husband) and I were making wedding plans for November of that year, so we were planning on waiting to "have children" aka "get cats" until we were married awhile. Well, it turns out our friend is very persuasive and she convinced us to take two of the kittens from the litter before winter set in. We went on our honeymoon in late November/early December and had two six month old kittens a week after we got back. They were named after the indie band, Belle and Sebastian. It's one of our favorite bands and the names just fit our beautiful calico Belle and sophisticated tabby Sebastian.

Emily was found under my in-laws' porch. They were sitting outside and heard a weird squeaking noise, like a bird or something. They didn't think much of it, but their Jack Russel Terrier wanted to check it out. My sister in law crawled under the porch and found little Emily, all skinny and covered with fleas. Momcat and littermates were no where to be found, so they have no idea where she came from. She was about 5 weeks old when they found her. They took her in, fed her constantly (she eats a lot!), gave her a bath to try to get rid of the fleas, and littertrained her. They already had two other cats (the one didn't like her) in addition to the dog, and they decided to try to find a home for the kitten.

As to how she got her name...We don't plan on having human kids, but we were joking around one day, asking each other if "an accident" would happen and I would get pregnant, what would we name the baby? We thought Emily was a nice girl name. Later that day, my in laws called us and asked us if we wanted a kitten. We decided that it was a strange coincidence that we were just talking about baby names and now we were offered a furry baby. We named the kitten Emily.

Tigger AKA- Kid D

What!? You mean- I'm NOT a dog!?

Purred: Tue Jul 21, '09 12:57am PST
I'm just gonna copy and paste my arrival story!

We have been living in our new house for about 3 months and the last couple weeks we have been hearing a lot of noise under the house. Because we live in the country we were scared it might be a possum or raccoon or some squirrels. So we set a humane trap. And Tigger is what we caught.

We pet him gave him some turkey sandwich meat and some water (It was in the 100 degrees + that day). Then we were stuck. He has been living on our back porch now for about a week. He is dying to come inside the house and will dart in only to be faced with my three dogs and will high tail it out. We would love to bring him in but it just would not work out with the dogs. But he can live out there as long as he wants to.

That was the old story! Tigger and the dogs get along GREAT! It all started after we had him neutered and had his injured foot fixed. We don't know how it happened, but we noticed him limping. My husband was not thrilled with "another vet bill" but I cried and said it could be our anniversary present so he let me get his foot fixed as well as him neutered.

The vet advised us to keep him inside for 2 to 3 weeks. We bandaged his foot and he would rip the bandage off and rip out his stitches. After another trip to the vet to put his stitches back in and he did it again. We got him the e-collar. Within two days we introduced him to the dogs and they did spectacular.

But he is still so gentle and accepting. I had a soft spot for him. I felt he had to have some traumatic experience in his life. He is SO sweet and LOVES people we know he had to have a home and one time. And then all the sudden weather it was an accident (he got lost) or on purpose (he was dumped out here) he went from a loving home life to living off rats and mice under a country home hiding from coyotes, loose dogs, feral cats, possums, raccons, and hawks.

He cannot get enough love, he follows us everywhere we go. I made a deal with my husband that if Tigger could be allowed in the house he could have the $1500 stimulus check. Now he comes in whenever he wants.

And he got his name because he is orange and he was always climbing up high and bouncing around. And Kid D because "kitty" is just to common he is called Kid D more than Tigger.

Snow White.

Snow was in an animal shelter near our house. My mom adopted her the night of Decmember 20th, 2004. She was 5 years old at the time. Snow her name in last home, so we decided to keep her name as it was. Plus, Snow seemed to fit her well since her coat is white like snow. big grin

Wicked

Im The Most- Important!!!

Purred: Fri Jul 24, '09 11:39am PST
Wicked- I adopted her from a shelter at 12 weeks old. It was between her and her sister (also tortie). But she was the most affectionate so I chose her.

I named her Wicked because I have found with alot of Tortie cats they end up with Halloween type of names like "Spooky" or "Boo" and I didn't want her to have a typical name. So I am a big fan of the musical Wicked and just thought it fit.

But don't let her name fool you. She is obsessively affectionate and if your not paying attention to her your going to get the "look of death" lol.

Smidgeon- I actually witnessed Smidgeon being thrown out a moving car when he was a kitten. I ran out and scooped him up first thing and found that he was only 3-4 weeks old. Just barely walking, skin and bones, and COVERED in blood sucking flea's. We actually thought a few times that Smidgeon would not make it.

I named him Smidgeon because he was so tiny he could fit right in the palm of my hand. He was just a little Smidgeon wink. He has now grown up to be our second biggest cat big laugh.

Quincy- I got Quincy from my uncle a couple years ago. My uncle had called me because he was purchasing new expensive furniture and didn't want the cat (Quincy is a persian) shedding all over it shrug. So knowing I am the family animal lover, he called to ask if I wanted him. Of course if I didn't he was just going to take him to the pound! So of course I told him I would take in Quincy. Who at the time even though he was nearly a year old was nameless.

I named Quincy after one of my favorite characters (Tommy Quincy) on a canadian tv show "Instant Star". The guy is extremely handsome and since Quincy is so handsome I figured the name just fit.

Emmett- I adopted Emmett last summer from a local no kill cat rescue. He had been in their foster program for over a year. I could not figure out why know one wanted this beautiful big sweet boy. He has been such a wonderful addition to the family.

I named Emmett after my favorite character from the "Twilight" books. Anyone who knows Emmett in the books is a big muscular guy with a funny sense of humor. Emmett has definately lived up to his name. He is our biggest cat and our big goof ball.

Rusty

Bow down, for I- am CAT

Purred: Fri Jul 24, '09 9:27pm PST
My baby (Rusty) came from a bad situation... I generally just say we got him as a stray, but there is more to that. A girl found him in a stray litter, and everyone took kittens away from the mom. To this day... I have no idea what happened to the mom, which is very saddening to me. Anyway, the girl that got Rusty.. was, erm, incapable of caring for him. So we rescued him from that person (who was my sister friend at the time, my sister took Rusty), well, my then late teenage year sister was never home and kept Rusty in her room all day, not letting me see him (I was young then, she didn't like me then lol). I began "sneaking" him out, cuddling with him, teaching him things, ect. Well, she found out and I just got to keep him. Every since he's been my "heart cat", and yes, he WILL live forever wink Oh, and he got his name because his first "owner" (I use the term lightly) called him Rustum, which is chinese for orange or something (according to her). When she told me the name I just said "I'll call him Rusty", and the name stuck ever since. Dear Cat I can't believe he's five!

Our other cats don't have as nearly good stories lol. Squeaky was from a rescue group, and fell in love with her immediately, she struck me like no other cat has, at least that I've seen in a shelter. So, after going back and forth from Petco, we finally got her. She is a sweetheart, and is always "squeaking", she came with her name, but we couldn't see her any other way! She's turning three in august, well, I think, that's when I got her and they said she was two at the shelter, so there you have it lol!

Jazzy and Jewels were from our friend, her cat got out and had an "oops" litter. Yeah I know, not to bright.. They are lovely girls, though. A bit of a rought start with Jasmine and me, but, she is my little girl now, and I'm glad. Their turned seven about two months ago. They certainly don't look it, though!
