How did everyone get there cat and why did you name them the name you did?

If you are wondering what is the right cat for you, this is the place to be. In this introductory forum we talk about topics such as breed vs. mix, size, age, grooming, breeders, shelters, rescues as well as requirements for exercise, space and care. No question is too silly here. This particular forum is for getting and giving helpful, nice advice. It is definitely not a forum for criticizing someone else's opinion, knowledge or advice. This forum is all about purring and learning.

Noble

Everyone loves- an orange tabby.

My cat, Noble, and his brother (my sisters cat) Malik were feral kittens. They're mother was a feral cat that we'd seen around the neighborhood every now and then. She hated people but knew how to use them to get some cat chow every now and again. The local cat lady would always put out some cat food or some milk for her. And, when she discovered she was pregnant, she began leaving out kitten chow. Well, we didn't know the cat, per se. We just saw her around.

One day, my brother and sister were walking home taking the short cut through the woods and they saw the cat on the side of the road. Sadly, she'd been hit. Her kittens were only feet away in a ditch. I can't remember how many of them they said there were... must've been around five or six. But, all of them were dead and getten eaten by ants but Noble and Malik. So, my brother took the two surviving kitties home. They were bearly weaned and Malik was obviously feral (he was so mean back then, he tore up my arm with his claws and bit me on more than one occasion) Noble, didn't really act feral but he was afraid of most people. He instantly took to me, though. I remember the first time I heard him purr- my heart swooned. I wasn't really a cat person so didn't know if a cat was for me. And, I was still a teenager and afraid to ask my mom if I could keep him.

So, we fostered Malik and Noble until we could find a home for them. My mom got up with shelters asking if they were taking cats, she found rescues that would allow us to list them, we asked around trying to find someone that could take them (together, of course). They were never listed on any website. Nor were they sent to a shelter. We got too attached and, soon, we were naming them.

I named Noble after a book by V.C. Andrews, Celeste. However, his name fits him to a T. Because, for the past four years, he has been nothing but noble to me and humans alike. He's my Noblesteed. Or, should I say, Noblecat?

Weeble

Weebs - I wobble but I- don't fall down!

Purred: Mon Mar 30, '09 3:18am PST
There are a lot of us, so I'm going to try to keep it short and sweet!

I, (Weeble) was born into a litter from a pregnant stray Momma took in. My hind legs are severely deformed, but I do just fine! When I was learning to walk on just two legs, I wobbled a lot, but I never fell. Mom picked Weeble! How fitting!

My brother Trouble was picked up at a Petco, someone had abandoned him there. He was mom's first, and she liked Trouble. He decided to live up to his namesake, and get himself into the worst of situations!

My brother Rascal came from Grandma. She got Rascal as a kitten, and named him Oscar. Well, Grandma called Mom one day screaming, "You'd better come get this kitten or I'm calling the pound!" Mom ran over, and "Oscar" had gotten into ALL of Grandma's food and made such a mess! So, "Rascal" seemed fitting.

Shadow was another abandoned-at-a-petstore kitten. She's solid black, quiet, and very "ninja."

Spit...well Spit was also a kitten of a stray litter. When she was a baby, Mom thought she was a boy. Even before she had her eyes open, she hissed and spit at everyone! Even her momma cat! Mom started calling her Spit, found out she was a girl, and well by then the name had stuck. She's a little spitfire!

Lucky & Hope were found on the side of the road at 5 weeks old after being thrown out of a moving vehicle. Dad rescued them from some thorny bushes. He's got the scars to prove it! Anyway, Lucky is missing his right eye. Hope, well, she..slid down the pavement and ripped the hide off her head all the way to her skull. cry She is brain-damaged, and very, very, scared of EVERYTHING even after being here over a year. We have a lot of Hope for her, so Hope is her name. Lucky, well he's just Lucky to be alive.

Our meowmy got us from a breeder of Scottish folds. Cosette was 12 weeks old when she came home but since I was a breeder for many years, I was older. I'll be six next month! Sometime in the future, she wants to get another kitty but will go the rescue route.

Cosette got her name because meowmy loves the musical, Les Miserables.
My name used to be Mouser of Purrfectfold but when Meowmy brought me home, she changed it to Chloe. I like Chloe better.

My Mommy found me in a local animal shelter. She knew she was looking for a big/fat male cat who was very laid-back. She thought she was being too specific and didn't think she would find a kitty that fit her description so perfectly. She walked in and I was the first kitty she saw. I did my "flop" for her in my cage and rubbed up against the glass to say hi. I was EXACTLY what Mommy and my Daddy were looking for so they couldn't pass me up. They visited with me and, came back very soon to take me home big grin.

The shelter named me Boris, and I know Mommy and Daddy didn't like this name originally. So they did a lot of internet searching trying to find me a new name. They really identify themselves with scandinavian culture and history so they looked through scandinavian names and names in norse mythology for something. Nothing seemed to fit me though. Everything else they came up with they didn't agree on, so Boris eventually stuck because the whole time during name searching that is what they had called me. Now, they both agree that Boris does fit me very well!

We have fostered lots along the way but we have two permanent residents Frankie and Runt:

Frankie picked us. We came home from vacation and the neighbor who was feeding Friday a big ferel fixed barn cat we took car of said that Friday had been giving all his food to a tabby cat. When I went out to feed him that night he brought Frankie with him, she was completely ematiated, you could see most of her ribs and her eyes looked like bug eyes because of how thin she was. We fed her and she dashed off before I could grab her and take her and get a good look at her.
That night we had a bomb fire in the yard and Frankie showed up, she mauled us for attention she was a totally sweetheart and not shy at all, obviously someone had dumped her off (we lived on a farm just a few miles from the city so drop offs happened ALOT) I got a good look at her and it was obvious she was nursing. The next morning a followed her out to the barns and found 5 kittens under the foundation, she swiftly carried them all out and dumped them at our feet, they where around 3 weeks old, and a little leary of us. All except Runt, he bounded over and jumped in my lap and rolled around then hurried off to swat at Fridays tail, and then back again.

We took them all in and got vet care for them. We found homes for all the kittens with various family members, except for Runt. He was teeny tiny and incredibly sick. He spent the first few months of his life huddled in the hood of my sweatshirt while I wrote finals for senior year. He pulled through but had recurring issues with crystals so he is on vet food for life, has a small eye abnormality, and weighs only 6 1/2 pounds grown, hes cost me more than all my dogs combined in vet bills. But he is my baby and do very well now. Runt got his name by accident, he was half the size of the other kittens and the name just stuck. Frankie (short for Frankenstein, no we never actually call her that) came from the Horror movie and novel theme we had for our foster cats. They are both happy indoor cats now. Frankie wouldnt go outdoors if you let her, she is much happier in the climate controlled house being waited on

Mommy adopted me from the Bideawee Shelter in Manhattan. My older brother passed away, and Mommy was very sad. So when she saw me on the shelter's website, she came in right away to visit me.

It was love at first sight for both of us. I didn't want to leave her lap that first night. But Mommy wasn't allowed to bring me home yet because I had ickies on my eyes, and the shelter wanted me to heal first.

A month later, mommy got to bring me to my forever home. And now my ickies are finally healing up. (Mommy says I'm such a good boy when she puts those droppie thingies in my eyes.)

Oh, and I'm named after Anderson Cooper. Mommy says we're both so photogenic and that we're both silver foxes!

Fur-Faced Friend- For Life

Purred: Tue Jun 2, '09 9:10pm PST
In our case, the right cat chose us.
Her arrival story is in her bio on her page.

As far as naming goes-it isn't settled yet...Six different people have different ideas of what her name should be, so we "try on" a different name for a month or so, as our darling reveals more of her nature to us.

Names we have/are considering are:

Sophie
Lila
Isadora
Daisy
Violet

We think her name should be dainty and feminine like her.

Let's put it to a vote here!!

I have loved everyone's stories here too!

Years ago, I saw my first flame point Siamese named Sherbert (Bert for short). I knew then that my next cat would be a flamepoint.

So when I was suddenly catless this last March, some little Siamese-cross babies came on the local internet and lo and behold, 2 out of the litter of 4 were flame points! I met them when they were only 3 weeks and had the pick of the litter - I chose the most outgoing flame point - he held his tail with a little flip at the top so that's why I picked him (friendly tail). And then I chose the darkest of the litter, a little seal point female.

Over the next month, I visited them 3 more times and began the search for names. When they arrived home at 7 1/2 weeks old, I first named them Radar and Pixie - Radar because he has such huge swiveling ears and Pixie because she's so little and sweet. But then I realized how Siamese they are and decided they needed Oriental names. First I found the name Ting Ting, which is also a woman's name meaning 'sleek and elegant' and it really fit the little seal point girl. But what would I call the flame point? He is anything but 'sleek and elegant', a bit of a doofus, in fact. Nothing seemed to fit until a name popped in my head: Fan Tan. It is a famous alley in Victoria's Chinatown, named for the gambling dens that used to be there - now trendy boutiques!

So Ting Ting and Fan Tan have stuck. They are great cat names and really suit their personalities. Ting is becoming more and more of the slinky athletic little Siamese girl and Fan Tan has yet to grow into his huge Siamese ears and big tabby feet.
