Choosing the Right Cat

GO!
If you are wondering what is the right cat for you, this is the place to be. In this introductory forum we talk about topics such as breed vs. mix, size, age, grooming, breeders, shelters, rescues as well as requirements for exercise, space and care. No question is too silly here. This particular forum is for getting and giving helpful, nice advice. It is definitely not a forum for criticizing someone else's opinion, knowledge or advice. This forum is all about purring and learning.

How did everyone get there cat and why did you name them the name you did?

There are so many wonderful stories here... big grin

A while back I stumbled upon the Savannah breed because I didn't know too much about cats and wanted to figure out if there was a particular breed I was interested in or if I should go to the nearby shelter (which seems to be more dog-oriented, they usually only have a handful of cats).

I discovered all the hybrid breeds during this time and started researching the hybrid cats used in the pairings. After much thought (almost a year) I decided that more than anything else I wanted a Savannah, and that after I complete my graduate work I would like to begin a Savannah cattery.

My boyfriend wasn't too enthusiastic about the Savannah....I think I remember him saying something along the lines of "its cool" laugh out loud but, regardless of his apprehension, he surprised me with the deposit on baby Kinako

My dad found my cat in a machine in a grocery store. He was taken to my dad's vet clinic and examined. We found out he had ringworm. We almost named him "Ringo", but we named him "Honey" because he is so sweet =) kitty

Mom adopted us from the Itty Bitty Orphan Kitty Rescue. We are brothers, and the rescue group wanted us adopted as a pair. We were going to adoption fairs every weekend with our foster Mom, but no one wanted us because we were getting big compared to the younger, cuter kittens (we were 7 months old by the time Mom got us), plus not too many people wanted 2 kitties. Our Mom has a weakness for tuxedo kitties and thought we were adorable - plus she specifically wanted to adopt 2 kitties who were already bonded to one another.

Our names "Tully" and "Lucas" came from the names of the roads where we were found abandoned when we were rescued. Mom shortened Lucas' name to "Luke" because she likes names that rhyme with words and had a hard time with "Lucas." She likes to call him "Lukey" and "Lukey the Pukey" - silly, we know, but that's our Mom!

We went to the shelter in search for a siamese cat or a siamese mix and were shown every single cat in the shelter when finally a woman came up us and said that there was a siamese mix that wasn't yet in the system and that we could have her for 20 bucks.
Of course, we took her! I mean one look at her and we fell head over heels for her! She was adorable and still is!!!
They told us that her name was Marilyn but we wanted to name her sometime more oriental. After all, she is a siamese mix. So we changed it to Mai-Lin which, we think, is the oriental-ish version of Marilyn. laugh out loud

My Mama and then Daddy went to the humane society to "just look" (silly humanslaugh out loud) , and found me. I think they liked me cause I got out of my cage and ran down the hall right when the shelter worker was comming around the corner. She yelled at them because they weren't suppose to have me out. Mama went back and adopted me as a suprise for Daddy. They named me Oreo because I am Black and White. In hindsite, that is not too original. My nickname is Missy because I must have got in trouble alot. You know, when parents call their kids Mister or Missy when they are being bad.laugh out loud

Mama had just lost her one year old kitten after she got outside and possibly got poisioned, and she decided she wanted another cat. She pre-decided on a black kitty and she knew she was going to name it Spooky. Most of the kittens were spoken for at the humane society, but then she saw me in a bottom corner cage with a couple other kitties who may or may not have been my siblings. I was the only black one not spoken for. She filled out the app. and had to wait a day for me. And by the way, my original name was Winnie.laugh out loud

Mama had just started fostering when she got me. I was part of the second litter she took in. She took me to Petco with my siblings, but then noticed that I wasn't feeling well. Good thing too because someone adopted my sister and brother together and might have took me instead. My brother ended up at the vet the next day with a high fever, so I guess he was getting sick too. He turned out OK.
Anyways, by the time I was feeling better and Mama had more kittens to take to Petco, she was so attached to me that she decided to keep me. As for my name, Mama had to come up with names on the spot for us before Petco, so she named us after characters in the Dracula novel. My brother was Vlad, my sister was Mina, and I got the name Quincy. Mama never considered changing it because I knew it by the time she adopted me. It's nice and original too - not many Quincy's around.dancing

MONA LISA

I REALLY, REALLY- loved being a- Mama

Purred: Fri Mar 27, '09 10:28am PST
A foster friend of my Mama got a call about me wandering in someone's garage and giving birth. They were not cat people so they were kinda afraid of me and they were feeding me DOG FOOD!!shock (Oh the horrors!!) So the friend went and got me and my little fat baby, and Mama offered to foster us since there was no other place for us to go. I ended up with a little orphan baby also, then I got distemper when they were about 6 wks. old. I spent 2 nights at the vet, but all of us survived. I started nursing more foster kittens after the 2 I had went for adoption (big kittens who didn't need to be nursed), so Mama had to hold off on me getting spayed. By the time I was finally done, Mama was very attached to me and had to keep me. dancing
As for my name, Mama thought I looked like I was smiling, so her foster friend suggested Mona Lisa. Mama just calls me Mona unless I'm being naughty. Then she uses my full name.laugh out loud
