Trixy
Oooo what's- that! I'm going- to get it! |
| Purred: Mon Mar 23, '09 1:43pm PST | | | | | | We got Trixy from my brother-in-laws neighbor that had kittens. They wanted to get rid of them it was an unexpected litter I think. She got the name Trixy because my daughter wanted to name her Oliver from the Disney movie Oliver and Company but I told her that cat was a boy. So she said Trixy. That was totaly random, I would have never thought of Trixy but it is cute. So Trixy it is.
What about everyone else? How did you get to the home you are in now and why are you named what you are?

Philbert
Snort! |
| Purred: Mon Mar 23, '09 4:04pm PST | | | | | | I love these posts. Theyre always so sweet and there's no angry catfights!
I got Phil at my local brooklyn shelter BARC last April. I started volunteering in the cat loft, and Loves being able to pet this one grey and white tabby in a bottom cage that was so sweet and quiet. so many other cats had so much energy and meowed and wanted attention and he would just sit in there with his eye closed and let you but his head and belly and was so sweet. He was very sick with stomach problems that no one could figure out. He was on perscripton food, but it didn't help very much. he was pretty weak and very thin, his head looked so big on his skinny body and his fur was greasy, but he LOVED giving everyone headbutts.
I would go back every Saturday and ask if Phil was still there, and sadly he still was. He got to come out of his cage after a few weeks when it was determined whatever he had probably wasn't contageous, but he would always walk right to a cat condo and sleep where he was hidden. After a few more weeks I could get him to come out and sit in my lap. He jsut broke my heart. He loved other cats but the hissed at him and swatted at him. he was so sweet! I'm getting teary eye'd just thinking about this! Oh woe!
I finally couldn't stand it anymore and I cried one night to my boyfriend about how I jsut wanted him to be safe and happy and I would do everything I could if I could have him and make his belleh all better. My boyfriend was behind me 100%, and just wanted to shut me up about Phil! Go get him already! I emailed the shelter right away asking to put him on hold until I could get there, and they wrote me back saying he already had an application in on him! I was destroyed! Oh so sad! I gave up hope and got a call the next day from the shelter saying the people didn't want him anymore and he was free! I was enthused!
I bought everything I needed on the weekend, so many toys! My BF and i went to visit on saturday and he came out of his sleeping place to come and greet us and rub up against us, his eyes were never open, but it made him look like he had a big grin on his face. I Left work early on tuesday and went to pick him up, everyone was so happy to see him leave, he was there for months, but no one wanted a kitty with explosive diarrhea! He came out slowly from his carrier in my room and walked around a bit and hid under the bed for just a few minutes, I finally saw his beautiful orange eyes when he looked at me from under the bed and he came right back out and purred around me. I stayed with him all afternoon and he laid in bed with me as I read a book. I invited my roommate and boyfriend to come in and meet him and he came right up to them and headbutted them and rubbed on thier legs.
After months of trial and error Ive learned hes grain and Poultry intolerant and with his new foods he doesn't have anymore poop problems and has put on some weight. His head is still big but his body grew into it. I'm so grateful for him. Everyone loves him, even my friends that don't like cats, but I love him the most. His name was Phil in the shelter and I've never known a name so perfect for a cat. even when i tried to change it my BF was like "no, he's Phil" and he's so so special and so big and handsome.
Phew! that was long! | | | | |

Christmas
Thirteen Pounds- of Pure Fluff!
|
| Purred: Mon Mar 23, '09 5:46pm PST | | | | | | I got Christmas in December 2007. He was found wandering around in the middle of the road by my mother, who was on her way to a meeting. He had infected eyes, and could not see. He also had worms and an upper respiratory infection. He weighed less than a pound. My mother stopped and brought this ball of gray fuzz to the meeting, where she and her friends fed him. My mother and I nursed him back to health. We named him Christmas, because he was rescued in December. Now, a little over a year later, he is still with us, now weighing in at twelve and one-half pounds. He has blossomed into an enormous Maine Coon with a playful personality! | | | | |

GOSMOT
I'M FINE WHERE I- AM THANK YOU |
| Purred: Mon Mar 23, '09 8:34pm PST | | | | | | I posted in OOPS!
Mommy came into the local SPCA to "waste time" and I chose her to be my new home. I already had my name and since I was only supposed to be 2.5 years at the time and this was my third time being adopted from the SPCA mom thought that it would be too much for me to get a new name and so left my name as is.

Calypso
933213 |
| Purred: Tue Mar 24, '09 1:47am PST | | | | | | I have three different cats that each have their own story so here goes:
Close to three years ago, I found a stray cat that was about 6-8 months old and I started feeding her even though my dad refused to let me take her in because he wasn't able to afford the pet deposit for our apartment complex at the time. A couple of weeks later, one of my neighbors decided to get her off the streets and took her to get spayed and ended up finding out that she was pregnant. I was able to talk my dad into letting me adopt one of the kittens when they were old enough. At first, I chose one of the boys even though I wanted the alpha female of the litter. Only a couple of days before I was going to bring the boy home, the family that had adopted the kitten I wanted brought her back since their other cat had tried to kill her. I deliberated on what to name her for close to a week and ended up deciding on Calypso because it means "One Who Conceals" in Ancient Greek and she happens to be a completely black cat. She's lived up to her namesake in that she likes to place herself where someone will step on her if the lights happen to be off.
Almost 6 months after I brought Calypso home, she was starting to become too much for my dad and I since I was going to school full time in addition to having a part time job. My sister was trying to find homes for a litter of 3 month old kittens at the time so I decided that I would see if one of them would fit with me. Since Calypso liked playing roughly, I ended up choosing one of the boys that was constantly pouncing on his littermates. My sister had named him Bruiser since he was so rough on the other kittens but I knew I needed to rename him when I got him home. He quickly submitted to Calypso since she was close to twice his size and I realized that when he wasn't playing, all he wanted to do was lay down next to either me or my dad so he could get a belly rub. Since he was already on his way to becoming an unusually gorgeous cat I decided to stick to the Greek theme in naming animals by naming him Adonis. Since then, he has realized that he's very pretty and insists on showing off at just about every chance he can get (except for when new people come over for the first time).
Then my latest addition: Shortly after we moved in together, my boyfriend started talking about how much he loves kittens and that he would love to have a little bundle of energy running around. After about a month of halfhearted searching through the shelter websites and craigslist, I found two kittens that were both really adorable and seemed to have the personality my boyfriend wanted. We decided to go and look at a little Snowshoe kitten that was advertised on craigslist first since he was already neutered and had his kitten shots and his fee was only $50. He was incredibly shy when we first met him but we both fell in love and decided on the spot to bring him home. On the way home, my boyfriend and I were discussing what to call him since the name he had (Linus) just didn't seem to fit him very well. I had already stated that I wanted to stick with Greek names if it was possible so after throwing out a few suggestions, DBF thought of Hermes and of course the little boy had to howl his agreement. Hermes is now about 7 months old and while he's easily doubled in size in the past four months, he's still a little bundle of energy that will come and cuddle when he's either hungry or tired.

Benny Grunch
Will Meow for- Treats!!!
|
| Purred: Tue Mar 24, '09 9:20am PST | | | | | | Our meowmy lost four cats (and her house and everthing she owned), in Hurricane Katrina in August,2005. When she finally got to settle in a FEMA trailer in April, 2006 she started looking for kitties to adopt her. Her sister, who is friends with a vet, found out about two kittens that had been left at the clinic. Since we were only two weeks old at the time, meowmy had to wait for us until May, 2006. She named us after New Orleans musicians, I am Emma Barrett - she was a lady who played jazz piano, and wore bells around her ankles, her nickname was "Emma the Bell Girl", my brother Louis for Louis Armstrong, one of the most famous musicians to come from New Orleans. Benny Grunch joined our family in mid 2007, he was a feral born on the property where the FEMA trailer was.....Benny Grunch is a local musician, visit his website at www.bennygrunch.com. Pete came from our mewomy's aunt's house, where he had turned up as a stray,....and he is named for Pete Fountain who is not only from New Orleans, but played for many years on the Tonight Show, then Charmane Neville who came in August 2008. Mewomy was having her nails done, and the owner said....."Miss Faye, would you like a kitten?".....the owner's daughter and son-in-law had gotten a kitten for their daughter, who is 11, they also had a 2 year old. Unfortunately the 2 year old did not know how to pick up and hold a kitten. The parents were afraid the kitten would bite or scratch the baby. When our mewomy was told if they did not find a home, the kitten would be brought to the SPCA, she melted. We thought we had a full house, but in December, 2008 Buddy showed up. Charmaine had gone into heat (she has now been spayed), and Buddy was one of her "visitors". After Charmaine was spayed he continued to come and visit, and walked into the house and had a snack, and proceeded to play with the Turbo Scratcher and Boogie Mat. He sort of comes and goes, but we consider him one of the family. He is named for Charles "Buddy" Bolden, a New Orleans musician credited with forming the first "Jazz" Band in 1901 .
We also enjoy hearing the stories of how kitties adopted their people and got their names.
P.S. Forgot to add --- this Thursday, March 26th is Emma and Louie's Third Birthday!!!Edited by author Tue Mar 24, '09 9:26am PST
