GO!

What breed of Kitty am I?

If you are wondering what is the right cat for you, this is the place to be. In this introductory forum we talk about topics such as breed vs. mix, size, age, grooming, breeders, shelters, rescues as well as requirements for exercise, space and care. No question is too silly here. This particular forum is for getting and giving helpful, nice advice. It is definitely not a forum for criticizing someone else's opinion, knowledge or advice. This forum is all about purring and learning.

I am not a big cat person, so I don't know much about cats! I was told Tigger is an american shorthair. I'm not sure if that is right. What do I look like to you?

Also is there any way to tell age of a cat? I have had him almost 6 months.

I am a big dog person, I need cats for dummies. Haha!

Not an American Shorthair, that's a registered breed. Cats without purebred pedigrees or registration papers do not technically have a breed at all. Something like 95% of all cats are non-purebreds and are called domestic short hairs (or medium or long hairs depending on coat length). All shelter/rescue cats are mixed breed domestics unless they were surrendered by an owner who sent their papers with them.

Atrus: Yup!

American, European, and British Shorthairs are each a specific breed of cat, with a pedigree and selectively bred!

Yep, he is just a cute domestic shorthair. My cat is one too, we got him as a stray from the park nearby. Just as they mentioned before Domestic short hair, medium hair, and longhair is pretty much the strays and shelter cats. They are also the most popular "breed" of cat even though they are not a recognized breed. One thing you will find about cats is they aren't anything like dogs. Which is how I feel in love with cats, we as in my family are dog people but ever since Stormy choice me, I have been a cat person ever since.
