If you are wondering what is the right cat for you, this is the place to be. In this introductory forum we talk about topics such as breed vs. mix, size, age, grooming, breeders, shelters, rescues as well as requirements for exercise, space and care. No question is too silly here. This particular forum is for getting and giving helpful, nice advice. It is definitely not a forum for criticizing someone else's opinion, knowledge or advice. This forum is all about purring and learning.

Wasnt i a darling? Still sadly missed.
If only meowmy was aware of the dangers of cats being outside
and getting "kitty aids" i would prob still be alive today.
But i was also spoiled and had everything a cat could want.

| Purred: Mon Sep 8, '08 2:58am PST | | | | | | I have two sensational moggies, and foster for our local shelter. I wanted to comment on the idea that if everyone went to rescues instead of breeders, there wouldn't be any homeless cats. To me, this is just not supported by reality.
At the rescue I foster for, we have had 2 likely purebreds so far this year, neither with papers. In comparison, we have had at least two thousand moggies. It's not the responsible breeders and those who buy from breeders who are causing the overpopulation problems. It is all the people who refuse to spay and neuter, but who also refuse to take responsibility for any kittens that their cat goes on to have. Those are the people who drop litters off at shelters around the world, get rid of the pregnant mother, or kick them all outside.
I also think it is the responsibility of those looking to buy a purebred cat to check out the breeders they are interested in. The kinds of criteria and things to look for are easy to find- when I was just starting to look into what you need to do to take proper care of a cat before bringing Fui home, the checklists came up all the time. Not realising you are going to a dodgy breeder is not an excuse in my opinion.
There are some truly beautiful purebred cats, and it would be sad if we lost them. While I am not a fan of the created breeds, I like that the genetic heritage of those such as Maine Coons are being protected.

I'm a scarf.. no- really.. a mink- scarf! |
| Purred: Tue Sep 9, '08 1:20am PST | | | | | | Yo! I'm a purebred AND a rescue! Lots of purebred clubs and societies have internet pages giving details of cats with pedigrees that need rehoming. I'm from a Cats Protection Shelter tho. Willow is the product of moggy not getting neutered. You can say what you like about breeders, but they (the decent ones) all insist their kittens get neutered, not like moggies.
Cats from shelters are usually neutered after rescue. They do ask for a contribution to cover this usually, nothing in life is free.
Dont diss purebreds! We all need love!

All cats are precious and bring us joy!

| Purred: Tue Sep 9, '08 2:45pm PST | | | | | | I will always adopt adults. I like that way better for a few reasons. 1) Milo was SUCH a bad kitten. I swear he never slept, bit me every chance he got and tore up everything in sight. He's now 6 and we have a great relationship, but I will more than likely NEVER have a kitten again thanks to his "convincing"!
2) What you see is what you get. When you adopt an adult, you know what their personality is, any quirks they may have, etc. It's just easier that way, I think.
But for those who want kittens, I think as long as you go with a responsible breeder who will ensure that none of his/her babies end up in shelters contributing to overpopulation, that's cool too. Whatever floats your boat.

| Purred: Tue Sep 9, '08 3:03pm PST | | | | | | just a side point Adopting a kitten is costs a lot more than a full grown cat.
An adult cat comes to you fixed and with all thier shots (if your getting him from a reputable sheltet) and micro chipped. In my neck of the woods the cost to adopt a cat is $124.00
Now if you adopt a kitten you have to get him at least a stool sample 20$ and offten dewormed another $20 first boosters $100 (vet visit included) 2nd boosters and rabies $120 (vet visit included) & that is a month apart. then you have to get him fixed $150 a little girl is more, micro chiped 55 - 90 $ & that is for a perfectly healthy kitten. that comes to $500 (if you go to an average vet) and that is not counting food litter flee meds toys and beds. all this and only in the first 6 months (less id you have a little girl and they cost more).
I cost mommy $355 when I was 6 months that included my fixing my microchip and having the 2 nails on my bad paw removed - She said that she shopped around to get that price that she was originally quoted $600 for all that.
So if your cheep like mommy You will ALWAYS want to adopt an older cat.
There are so many good reasons to and so many looking for a home.
If on the other hand you're not cheep like mommy then what ever floats your boat as the post befor me says (sorry forgot your name)

| Purred: Thu Sep 11, '08 5:35am PST | | | | | | I can't help on where 'moggie' comes from, I just prefer it to my mum's other term for me and Fui- born in a bin cats! We weren't BORN in a bin, we were put there afterwards! Silly human!!
Forest, at our shelter, all the kitties come desexed, microchipped and upto date on their vaccines. You pay less to take an adult home, as a bit of an incentive. Yay for adult adoptions!
