Calling all Norwegian Forest Cats!!!

As some of you may know, I had a serious crush on a Norwegian Forest Cat that I met at a cat show a while back, but was terribly disappointed to discover that "she" was really a "he"! Anyway, that got my Meowmy interested in Norwegian Forest Cats (we're all Maine Coons here, except for Spot), and she's thinking of getting one sometime (hope it's a cutie-pie girl!!!). However, upon talking to other cat show friends, she was told that, while NFCs look incredibly sweet, they can have nasty temperaments. Can that possibly be true?
Adopting from a shelter isn't an option for us, as there are no NFC shelter kitties in Japan. So, we'd love to hear from some Catsters with purebred NFCs about what NFCs are really like. And if there's anyone out there with experience with both Norwegian Forest Cats and Maine Coons, we'd love to hear how they are similar or different, and also whether they're likely to get along.
Hi there. I'm a NFC. I can tell you that I can sometimes get rather nasty....especially at the vets. It even says on my chart that i'm not friendly. Most of the time though as long as my mom is not trying to clip my nails or dad doesn't get me rough housing I'm a lover. I just love getting underfoot and will even chase mom and dad down....they can even VERY gently tug on my tail and walk away and I run after them!!!!!!!!!! It's kind of like a game to me.....they are very carefull about how hard they tug so they don't hurt me. However if mom is clipping my nails I will growl and let her know i'm not happy about it. I use to be a lot worse then I am now but I didn't have the best start......So I think for the most part if your kitty has a good/great start in life he/she will be a total lover......unless you are doing something that it isn't happy about you doing.
Our Mom has a friend that adopted a purebred NFC, after his original owner passed away. Max is a big, beautiful boy with a very sweet disposition. Mom hasn't heard any reports of personality problems with him, and he sure is gorgeous.
My sister and I are both purebred Norwegian Forest Cats. You can ask our mom or our veterinarian, we are as sweet and well behaved as any two cats can be. We love being petted by our humans, being held, being with our human, love all other cats, and love dogs as long as we know them. Not a mean whisker on us!! As with any cat, alot depends on how much social interaction we have the first 4 months of our lives. That is why a good breeder does not let a kitten go to a home until they are at least 4 months old. Hope this helps!
Smudge and Sissel
You're absolutely right about the breeder keeping the kitten for 3-4 months--socialization as a kitten is an absolute must for creating a loving and happy cat! Actually, Meowmy already has a breeder lined up...There aren't too many NFC breeders here in Japan OR NFCs themselves, but their coalition is strong. We hope to be among their number sometime in the not too distant future!
I have a norwegian forest cat, and I can't imagen people say their personalities are nasty. She's litteraly the sweetest cat I've ever seen. She's always around, always in the same room, you can do anything with her, pick her up and carry her around in your arms, pet her belly, shake her paws, even turn her upside down.
She never leaves your side and when she sees you walking in from somewhere else she greets you with a prriiiew. She has never shown even the slighest sign of agression and sleeps next to me on the bed. Its the perfect cat, and she's purebred.
(I must add she's europian, from scandinavian, german and dutch lines, I'm not sure if the character is different oversea)
I must also add she was kept at the breeder for 3 months and was properly socialised with everything which might be why she's such a good cat. I've never had such a sweet cat in my intire life.
I can not compare her with maine coons, as I've never had those, but I can compare her to birmans.. she's much nicer then my old birman, who was also properly socialised for 3 months at the breeder.
Hiya Harvey, we just wanted to share with you a Web site for a Maine Coon Cattery near where we live. Their Maine Coons are always the hugest cats in the show! I think I was the third biggest cat in last year's show here and the one in Waco and their two Maine Coon adults were the biggest. Because one judge asked how much I weighed and mom said 18 pounds (dad always says 19 0r 20--shame on dad!) and the judge said I was the third biggest cat she judged that day. But the dad came over to see me and asked mom, "where is the 25 pound cat I keep hearing about?" MOL Mom says, "well, he's not exactly 25, more like 18." The guy says something like, "I know, I'm just kidding!" MOL
Well, here is their Web site.

Mom is looking forward to seeing their cats in the next two shows here. I have a show in less than two weeks, on June 14.
Weighing in on both NFC and Maine Coons - meow-mom has a NFC now (me, Bonnie the Beautiful aka Bonnie the Bathmat MOL).
I have to be brushed alot more than her previous 2 maine coons, but I'm a lover!! No nasty except when someone else tries to eat my treat Sometime I do get jealous of them, only because they like people alot too.
Both the maine coons really like people attention, but they were very forgiving of letting me come join them. They like belly rubs and talk more than me, but I have a preett type meow instead of their more *meooooowwwout* meow
Oh, Bonnie, I've seen you on the Forums before, and I have to admit that...blush ...you're exactly my type. I have this thing for little grey Norwegian Forest Kitties, you see, especially ones that look like bathmats. I fell in love with one at a cat show, but alas, that cat turned out to be a boy, and I like GIRLS. Do you think we might have a future together? You can check out my page to see that I'm actually quite a handsome fellow without this stupid tiara. Oh, and the age difference doesn't matter to me. I'm sure you won't hold it against me that I'm altered, as I assume you're spayed. Since I live in Japan, ours would have to be a long-distance relationship, but I can assure you that I am capable of the deepest of passions.
