Choosing a companion

If you are wondering what is the right cat for you, this is the place to be. In this introductory forum we talk about topics such as breed vs. mix, size, age, grooming, breeders, shelters, rescues as well as requirements for exercise, space and care. No question is too silly here. This particular forum is for getting and giving helpful, nice advice. It is definitely not a forum for criticizing someone else's opinion, knowledge or advice. This forum is all about purring and learning.

Hello, We have a lovely 6 month old kitted called Lila that we rescued from a shelter at 3 months. We both work all day and have decided to get her a companion. What age and gender should we get to maximise the chances of them becoming great friends.

Welcome to Catster, Lila!

Our cat mother, rather by accident, found that getting a different gender and a bit younger cat seems to work well. Everyone has an opinion, of course, but it seems that cats of different genders are not so territorial. For you, since you are young, a male (neutered, or to be neutered) would probably work well. You would be able to play and grow together. We have gone male, female, male, each younger than the previous, and the family is very happy.

Good luck, and purrs to you,
