Choosing a companion

If you are wondering what is the right cat for you, this is the place to be. Hello, We have a lovely 6 month old kitted called Lila that we rescued from a shelter at 3 months. We both work all day and have decided to get her a companion. What age and gender should we get to maximise the chances of them becoming great friends.

Welcome to Catster, Lila!

Our cat mother, rather by accident, found that getting a different gender and a bit younger cat seems to work well. Everyone has an opinion, of course, but it seems that cats of different genders are not so territorial. For you, since you are young, a male (neutered, or to be neutered) would probably work well. You would be able to play and grow together. We have gone male, female, male, each younger than the previous, and the family is very happy.
