New cat in town

If you are wondering what is the right cat for you, this is the place to be. In this introductory forum we talk about topics such as breed vs. mix, size, age, grooming, breeders, shelters, rescues as well as requirements for exercise, space and care. No question is too silly here. This particular forum is for getting and giving helpful, nice advice. It is definitely not a forum for criticizing someone else's opinion, knowledge or advice. This forum is all about purring and learning.

Ms.Kitty has been our cat for four years and has been getting along well with my two other dogs. But my moms friend gave us a cat and now she has been bitting us because we are paying more attention to the other cat than her. She has been hissing at us and bitting us when we are around her and the cat is near by. We are paying more attention to the new cat more beacause she needs to learn what to do and what not to do.On the other hand Ms.Kitty already knows how to behave and knows our rules. I still pay attention to Ms. Kitty but she still bites what should I do?

Give the new cat her own space, a separate space from Ms. Kitty for at least a week before you introduce them out to each other again. You can give the new kitty attention in the separate space without Ms Kitty knowing about it so she wont be as jealous. Give lots of attention to Ms Kitty too.

here are some good links on how to re-introduce them the right way:

Ms Kitty, the kitten will know you're the boss anyway. Senior cats always know how to get across. At first, keeping them separate allows for them to get acquainted slowly, and get used to the idea that they'll have to deal with another cat.

Miss Kitty, No offense, but when the others give you advice (which is what you asked for) you keep rejecting it. I suggest you give their advice a try and then let us all know if it worked. I doubt your kitten is much different from others.

Peppy's brat here: But when I was a younger kitten I jumped on Peppy and gave her ( opposite of heaven here). Peppy was too old to fight back so the human child stepped in but since Miss Kitty is only 4 I know it is not hard to put the kitten in her place for her. Like Peppy I suggest you give the ideas a whirl before rejecting them.

Ms Kitty the kitten if just testing her boundaries but what important is your older cat is upset by this and if you dont introduce them the right way they may NEVER learn to get along because the older cat will always hold a grudge.
