hi! I (Sam and Henry's mom) am going away for about a week sometime this month. I live alone and I don't know anyone in my neighborhood who could take care of the kitties, but I'm not sure if they could handle the car ride. Of course I would probably sedate them (the drive is between 6 and 8 hours) but for such a short stay it would probably be too traumatic.

How would I find a good place to board them? I don't even know where to begin.

I don't know anything about sedating cats for travel. My "nephew" Jinx needed sedation when he made the 4 hour trips between here and Albany, New York.
Perhaps your vet knows of a place. Some vets even board cats. We have a local place that boards primarily dogs, but they have fantastic facilities for cats as well. Perhaps you can find one near you. Mom has never needed to board us, but her dog Molly went there for a week and came home very happy.

I would also suggest a pet sitter. Check with your vet or ask at the local pet supply store. Look for one who is licensed, bonded and insured and who has references. This way your kitties can stay home where they will probably be more comfortable and happy. A good pet sitter will not just feed them but play with them, scoop litter, pick up your mail, turn lights on and off, etc..

Good Luck!

Yup, Diego is right! Kitties, unlike doggies, bond to their environment. Doggies bond with their owner. So the little ones will be far happier to stay home with a sitter popping in. A good sitter will also play with the kitties. And it might be a good idea to call home when the sitter is there. Our mom found that out when my big sister Mamie was young and wouldn't come out from under the bed for five days . HER mom came over to feed Mamie twice a day and called mommy on vacation and dropped the receiver down the back of the bed where Mamie was and mommy talked to Mamie and after that Mamie was so much happier that she popped right out from under the bed!

Wow, that's interesting. Mommy's half-sis is a pet sitter/groomer/dogwalker. Mommy said she wished she would have used HER instead of her best friend/neighbor, because she didn't scoop out the litter box the whole time Mommy was gone. Oof! After five days that thing really smelled!
Just make sure the sitter has good references. Kitties do like to stay home instead of being boarded at the dreaded vets!

Hmm.. I'm definitely going to look up pet sitters in the area then.
Makes me a little sad though, I wish I could take them with me! They love being around people so much and I know I'll worry every minute.

Momma & Daddy have left twice so far for a week at a time and both times we went to the rescuers house since it's too far for her to travel... we get our own room there so we don't have to stay in a cage and she plays with us everyday so it's not horrible but it's okay. Momma says to find a pet sitter if you can!
