Which vaccinations should we get?

This forum is for cat lovers seeking everyday advice and suggestions on health-related issues. Remember, however, that advice on a public forum simply can't be a substitute for proper medical attention. Only your vet can say assuredly what is best for your cat.

Yes he had a combo vaccine, IIRC 3 years ago.

I asked my vet about the Purevax one and she said she has it but that it is only available as a one year vaccine. thinking Help?

I wouldn't think it would matter if it was labeled as a 1yr vaccine. You're vaccinating to give your cat antibodies against certain things. Those antibodies don't implode after exactly 366 days. I believe that any vaccine can be given minimally and last for years. I'm not exactly talking the vaccines labeled as "three years," but more like lifelong. For mine, I do two sets of boosters as a kitten (or three if its a puppy - but that's a different forum wink ), then maybe one booster as an adult, and then that's it way to go

The problem is we go to events and cat shows sometimes, so we have to have papers that say we are up to date on our vaccinations... thinking

Blaze, the show rules that Bumpurr posted say only that you must be vaccinated for rabies -- for the other things mentioned it says "should". It also says you could have to show proof of current rabies vaccination, not the others.

If you decide to have the RCP vaccination again, both the AAFP and AVMA recommend it be given no more often than every 3 years, even though the Purevax vaccine says it's a 1-year shot. That could be because the mfr can't claim it provides protection longer than they've tested and proven. Cynically, it may be to their advantage not to prove it's good for longer than a year.

Linus gave the link to the AAFP recommendations (on the first page of this thread). On the AVMA site Vaccine-Associated Feline Sarcoma Task Force it says:

"Recent research has provided compelling evidence to suggest that the panleukopenia/rhinotracheitis/calicivirus vaccines provide adequate protection for several years, so in response, many veterinarians are now recommending that this vaccine be "boosted" at three-year intervals as well."

So both the AAFP and AVMA recommend every 3 years, not every year, and they don't give any exceptions for a particular vaccine. Many people feel the RCP vaccines provide protection for longer than 3 years, perhaps for life.

We've been getting the Purevax RCP shot (the 1-year shot) every 3 years. We'll have titer tests next time, though, to see if we need it.

Someone posted Dr. Pierson's article, which is great. I just also wanted to share this one from Dr. Jean Hofve's site, littlebigcat.com:

Ashlynne I know but sometimes we go to other events and pet shows and things and they want to see proof of vacc and they generally want rabies+combo. For dogs they usually want proof of rabies+combo+bordetella.

I wish they did, vet check, at cat shows. They do at horse shows, and at the bigger shows, ya ain't even getting on the grounds, without passing the vet check station. And the papers better be right, to a T. The vet can pull your horse off the trailer, if something don't look right to him. Could be a prob, if your horse doesn't load. And, you have to show your registration papers, at the office check in, to get your number and stalls. They are beyond, pickey. Something didn't look right to the ladies there, forget now what it was, but I knew all my papers were in order. They called the Appaloosa Association, right then and there.

First cat show I ever went to, went to the check in, with papers in hand, and asked, where is the vet check. They looked at me, like I was nuts. First show, they asked? Yes sir, got all my health papers here, where is the vet check? We don't have vet checks, they said, well why not, I asked. Yup, troublemaker, I was, from day one, mol, mol, mol. laugh out loudwaveway to gohug

Thanks everyone for the advice!

We are going to the vet tomorrow so we will let you guys know how things work out although only some of the cats are going, it is too hard (and expensive!) to bring everyone at once so we are splitting it up into 2 appointments.

Bumpurr that is true, actually I wish they would check those things more often. I remember when I used to go the ferret shows and contests they were "vetted" shows, and the one time they did not check papers (even though the info said it was vetted) my two ferrets ended up catching something horrible. frown

However some of the pet shows and other events we go to with the cats DO check vet paperwork when you enter. I think we may also need it for animal assisted therapy.

Hey just wanted to say thanks everyone for the info! We asked the vet and she does have the Purevax so we got that. Only problem is the records say that we are due in 1 year since she says that vacc is good for a year.
