This forum is for cat lovers seeking everyday advice and suggestions on health-related issues. Remember, however, that advice on a public forum simply can't be a substitute for proper medical attention. Only your vet can say assuredly what is best for your cat. | Purred: Thu Aug 21, '08 5:14pm PST | | | | | | sounds, to me, like her mom is doing the best she can with what she has...wouldn't your pawrents do the same? I know mama gave up eating more than once make sure she could get us food...that's what pawrents do.
maybe, if we put our heads together, we can help Velcro & her mom get her spayed at least?
we can't do anything about people that are disrespectful or ignorant, but we CAN try to help the ones desperately reaching out for help...
mama had similar problems before & it's not an easy spot to be in...especially if most of the options aren't going to fix the situation (kittens or high-kill shelter...either way doesn't bode well for poor little Velcro)...she's reaching her paws out for help...let's try to find her some assistance instead of being judgemental about it

| Purred: Thu Aug 21, '08 6:44pm PST | | | | | | Gracie Mae,
Throughout this thread (and many of Velcro's previous threads) many of the catsters have offered a lot of helpful advice regarding what to do and who to contact to do it. It's not about being judgmental, it's about frustration that advice is being asked for, but generally not followed through with. For how long do we hear about the stresses of Velcro's human and how unhappy Velcro seems to be before our answers begin to seem abrupt? Cats and humans seem unhappy in the situation, but nothing seems to be being done about it. I think that's a very just cause for frustration on the part of the catsters that are trying to be sympathetic and help as best we can.

I'm the baby,- gotta love me! |
| Purred: Thu Aug 21, '08 11:03pm PST | | | | | | Thank you Khina.
We're not heartless, really we are not. But we keep reading about how Velcro's vets' refusal to spay her is causing Velcro distress due to cycling in and out of heat, and causing her mom distress, and all that... and we can't help but wonder why her mommy stopped at the humane society, and her vet? Why is she not calling other vets in the area and seeing if one of them gives her a different answer. Also, I understand how she is in Southern Washington, and it's kind of a rural area, and her finances are not the best.
But short of finding a vet that will spay Velcro there, I think a very viable solution is to phone to other shelters or rescues in the state, explain Velcro's plight, and see if they won't take Velcro in to give her care that the local establishments refuse her. I know that her mom's car doesn't work well, but if she found a placement or a rescue that is willing to maybe spay her and return her, she could always ask the Catster Railroad to help. I'm sure there are Catsters there who would be willing to even give Velcro and mom a ride to a vet across the state if she asked.
For that to work though, Velcro's mom needs to come up with the resolve to leave no stone unturned, instead of thinking fatalistically: "Well, my vet won't spay her, and the county won't spay her, so that's that. Our life is horrible". That does not help Velcro, and it does not help her mom either. We'd love to help, but ultimately, Velcro's mom is the one who is there, and the only one who has to purposefully act, rather than passively react, in order to break this cycle that Velcro and herself are going through.
Lulu, you mentioned that your mom offered for Velcro to come stay at the shelter you work in, but that it was full and was not accepting more cats. But what if Velcro's mom just found someone to take Velcro down to your shelter? Would the shelter at least consider brokering an emergency spay for Velcro so that she can come by, be spayed by a vet, and be driven back to her mom? Or would that be too stressful to a cat in her condition?Edited by author Thu Aug 21, '08 11:05pm PST

Fix one save- 1,000 please- spay/neuter! |
| Purred: Fri Aug 22, '08 11:10am PST | | | | | | Another update, it turns out that she was inside the whole time, she was in my friend's room which is why I didn't see her; and her current vet also stated that she is now comfortable spaying her because her congestion issues seem to be at bay and her lung sound "excellent".
To answer a few questions, the person who doesn't obey the rules is my brother, and he's my mothers "baby", in her eyes he can pretty much do no wrong, it's how she was manipulated by her husband. My landlord is my mother, I called her my landlord at the time because I was just really frustrated with her; the renters are hers, not mine, and they are family or close friends of the family (the close friends of the family we have no problems with, they actually follow rules, don't cause trouble, and watch out for our pets like they were their own). I pay rent but I don't have the final say on who lives here. I'm also very much caught in a catch 22...if I leave somewhere else, my mother will be screwed, she can't make the bills without my brother and his girlfriend paying rent and she might very well lose the house and then be left with anywhere to go, but staying here sometimes seems more stress than it's worth. I want to leave, but I also don't want to screw over my own mother. We also just evicted the main two causes of stress which were a relative and his girlfriend, and they are not welcome back, my mother has even said she doesn't even want them visiting, and she's pretty much written off that whole side of the family. Already the stress level has gone down immensely, and then my brother came in with his "I shouldn't have to pay rent because I'm the son" attitude and brought over a male cat (which I didn't even know about, and I don't even think my mother knew about).
The reason that no vets would spay her is because the ones who looked at her and listened to her lungs and breathing were both afraid of the anesthetic, that fluid would fill up in her lungs. For the past several months, since I knew she had herpes, she's been on antibiotics and has been getting lysine tablets crushed into wet food. Her vet yesterday told me that she's finally comfortable having Velcro spayed since her lungs sound much better and she has nearly no congestion; she also agreed when I told her that I thought she may have gotten out. It wasn't just the county or the one vet, I've called and talked to multiple vets in the area and was told that they would not spay a sick cat, and they'd only do it if the herpes was dormant, and at the time, it wasn't.
Lastly, to the caster who asked, yes, I do love Velcro, if I didn't would I be paying to keep her on antibiotics and lysine tablets all the time, be trying so hard to keep her indoors and to get her fixed, and taking her to the vet regularly for re-evaluations.Edited by author Fri Aug 22, '08 11:20am PST

| Purred: Fri Aug 22, '08 11:35am PST | | | | | | Ohhh yes, I just have to contact my friend who paid to have her spayed with the humane society a few months ago and the humane society itself, if they examine her and say they won't alter her then I am just going to cut my friend a money order for the amount she spent for the surgery, and then pay and set up an appointment for her regular vet at VCA to do it. | | | | |

| Purred: Fri Aug 22, '08 2:03pm PST | | | | | | Just have the other vet spay her. Forget putting Velcro though the stress of another visit at the Humane Society, just have that done. I am willing to bet your friend will be perfectly understanding of the whole thing, if you tell her you just had to go with whoever would get this done and that time was of the essence.
Think of it as "your animal lover friend just donated money for another cat to be spayed". That's not a bad thing, per se.

Fix one save- 1,000 please- spay/neuter! |
| Purred: Fri Aug 22, '08 6:17pm PST | | | | | | I wish the people here who are claiming I didn't take anyone's advice only knew...knew me, knew Velcro, knew our exact situation. I've stated before that I have called MULTIPLE veterinarians, none of them were willing to do it because of her congestion problems; and a couple of months ago I called the very few rescue groups that are around here, they're packed. I had an appointment to take her to the Oregon Humane society, and then our car broke down and the only friend who I know that has a reliable car that would be willing to do it was gone with his wife/fiance for a good while before and after the appointment to take her to the oregon no kill shelter was set. I've been terrified of adopting her to anyone else for fear that they would just dump her outside when she went into heat, I cannot even tell you the multitude of people who do that around this county. And I couldn't set her up to live with my fiance and his father because they have a male cat there who cannot be neutered due to heart murmur, so he couldn't take her.
When I first took her in and we thought she was fixed---she wasn't regularly coming into heat--I posted multiple classified ads, listed her as adoptable on catster, posted an "ad" on petfinder, and posted about her on my local news paper's forum, and no one wanted her because she was "too old" or "looked too much like a wild cat"...seriuosly. None of my friends could take her either and none have been, they either have dogs that don't like cats, can't have pets, or have family members that are allergic to pets.
Maybe I was an idiot for taking her in, I've always let my bleeding heart and emotions rule over rational thinking, and sometimes I get in over my head, now I know better. But at the same time I figured "she's a small adult cat, she's friendly, and she doesn't look sick, what could go wrong?" At the time I didn't know the frequency of feline herpes, only that it was vaccinated against; all of the rescued cats I've had in the past never had herpes or similair problems even though most of them didn't even come to us originally with any vet records. It was clear when we found her that she was emaciated, and she was in a bad part of town (where animals are hit by cars and just left...but that happens all over here it seems), and I knew if I left her there that she would probably starve, die of dehydration, or get mauled by the two dogs next door who were highly small animal aggressive, or worse, get picked up as a pet by some druggie that doesn't even try to take care of themselves...I left her for one day at that house and it ate away at my conscience the whole night, I couldn't stand the thought of just letting an animal die in a horrible way, so I took her in. And since she has gotten regular veterinary care, antibiotics, two flea medications--topical front line plus and capstar--, lysine tablets, and a quality diet. I do everything in my power to keep her inside and to care for her, and I've just been waiting on a single vet that would be willing to spay her because none of the ones I tried to talk to felt comfortable doing it. I don't know why, but there only seems to be a couple of veterinary offices in this county that people generally tend to speak well of, and one of them is the place that she's going to now.Edited by author Fri Aug 22, '08 6:19pm PST

Congratulations, sweet Velcro! You're going to be a real, full-fledged house cat now!
