 | | | | I wish the people here who are claiming I didn't take anyone's advice only knew...knew me, knew Velcro, knew our exact situation. I've stated before that I have called MULTIPLE veterinarians, none of them were willing to do it because of her congestion problems; and a couple of months ago I called the very few rescue groups that are around here, they're packed. I had an appointment to take her to the Oregon Humane society, and then our car broke down and the only friend who I know that has a reliable car that would be willing to do it was gone with his wife/fiance for a good while before and after the appointment to take her to the oregon no kill shelter was set. I've been terrified of adopting her to anyone else for fear that they would just dump her outside when she went into heat, I cannot even tell you the multitude of people who do that around this county. And I couldn't set her up to live with my fiance and his father because they have a male cat there who cannot be neutered due to heart murmur, so he couldn't take her.
When I first took her in and we thought she was fixed---she wasn't regularly coming into heat--I posted multiple classified ads, listed her as adoptable on catster, posted an "ad" on petfinder, and posted about her on my local news paper's forum, and no one wanted her because she was "too old" or "looked too much like a wild cat"...seriuosly. None of my friends could take her either and none have been, they either have dogs that don't like cats, can't have pets, or have family members that are allergic to pets.
Maybe I was an idiot for taking her in, I've always let my bleeding heart and emotions rule over rational thinking, and sometimes I get in over my head, now I know better. But at the same time I figured "she's a small adult cat, she's friendly, and she doesn't look sick, what could go wrong?" At the time I didn't know the frequency of feline herpes, only that it was vaccinated against; all of the rescued cats I've had in the past never had herpes or similair problems even though most of them didn't even come to us originally with any vet records. It was clear when we found her that she was emaciated, and she was in a bad part of town (where animals are hit by cars and just left...but that happens all over here it seems), and I knew if I left her there that she would probably starve, die of dehydration, or get mauled by the two dogs next door who were highly small animal aggressive, or worse, get picked up as a pet by some druggie that doesn't even try to take care of themselves...I left her for one day at that house and it ate away at my conscience the whole night, I couldn't stand the thought of just letting an animal die in a horrible way, so I took her in. And since she has gotten regular veterinary care, antibiotics, two flea medications--topical front line plus and capstar--, lysine tablets, and a quality diet. I do everything in my power to keep her inside and to care for her, and I've just been waiting on a single vet that would be willing to spay her because none of the ones I tried to talk to felt comfortable doing it. I don't know why, but there only seems to be a couple of veterinary offices in this county that people generally tend to speak well of, and one of them is the place that she's going to now.Edited by author Fri Aug 22, '08 6:19pm PST
