How do catsters feel about indoor/outdoor cats that are altered and microchipped?

i took that stray to a shelter by me the next morning, he was microchipped, and as of 5/20, the shelter called, said they found it's owner, was going to be picked up today by them. so, i my best advice is get chipped, cause, with out the chip, nobody would have known who's cat it was, and his family was looking for him.

Cats that go outdoors inevitably don't live as long...

They're exposed to lots of deadly things- other cats w/diseases, dogs that will kill them, mean kids, cars, poisons, you name it- they can get into the mess.

It's never cruel to leave a cat indoors, as long as its getting plenty of play, attention, toys! I got my kitten an affordable cat tree at Walmart and that helps with his boredomsmile

All the outdoor cats I've seen don't last long. They end up as road kill, get killed by dogs, or get diseases (vaccines aren't 100 percent fool proof)...

This is a testy topic...however....I have had the terrible experience of losing my precious purr balls to car accidents.....again however when I was growing up we had a big orange male/neutered cat named Muffy who was indoor/outdoor...in the summer it was mostly outdoor as he would have a fit if we didn't open the door...he lived until he was over 18 years and died of just plain old age stretched out by his favorite thing..his food dish. As an adult I rescued the author of this post as well as two other outdoor "wild" cats...who did well indoors...until they wanted out...especially Sydney who was 2 or 3 when we rescued him from his life as a Tom cat....actually we were just going to get him shots and neuter him and put him back where he seemed to come from..but then he somehow snuck into our hearts and we moved him in here...but especially in the warm months he wants out and if we don't let him he will spray the nastiest smelling urine I have ever smelled....so we live in a certain harmony where he gets everything he wants. lol
I have had my heart broken by losing cats to cars....but one of my cats I decided to keep indoors...BIG mistake...because on occassion since he was a wee 6week old he would sneak outside...but I would get him back within about 10 min....but I am convinced that had I let him outside on a regular basis he would have learned about the perimeters of what is safe and not safe....because he was so sheltered...literally he just assumed everything was safe...where as my author here lived outside for years before we ever adopted him and seems to know not to go to dangerous areas...like the street...in fact our mailbox is on the edge of the street and when I get the mail he will only come as far as 1/3 down the driveway....no street for him..Thank Goodness. So, you see I feel it is a matter of what you feel is in the best interest of your pet....I think that cats need to go outside at least part time...as long as they have their shots and their claws. I don't believe in leashes or harnesses for cats as I feel that they could choke etc.
