Hurray for Mooch! There's nothing like a good poop to make the world seem all rosy again!
applause

By the way, if you ever need pumpkin again, I bet you can get it in baby food jar form. You know how the Japanese are wild about kabocha. Baby food can be found in the supermarket or drugstore, and I bet a pumpkin flavored one would have a picture of a kabocha on it, in case you couldn't read the label/ingredients. That's IF this problem ever occurs again (hope it doesn't!) and you didn't freeze the leftover pumpkin from this time.

Again, cocatulations to Mooch for "working out the problem."

Yay! Chami has landed as well! cheer

Two rock hard gum drops, poor girl.

I think I'll continue a bit with the pumpkin puree.......or is that going get habit-forming? thinking

Lulu and Yoyo just went home, so I won't be able to monitor them, but they did take their hard poops last night, so I wasn't too worried about them.

Ahhh, thank you everyone! Now I can sleep in peace!

ETA : Harvey - what a great idea to look for pumpkin baby food! I'll try that! That would be a smaller can, too. smile

Oops, that should have been "Concatulations" in my last post. Can't keep up with this cat lingo...

I love it--"Chami has landed"! laugh out loud

The baby food would come in jars, so you could close the lids and keep them in the fridge while the depooping was going on.

This thread has generated a lot of posts, so I'm sure that other people have told you this, but kittens tend to have more poop problems than adult cats--things sort of settle down once their digestive systems grow up. Or at least that's been my experience.

By the way, since I've got your attention, do you know about getting L-lysine in Japan? Chibi has/has had a URI, and in the States everyone uses a non-prescription supplement called L-lysine, which apparently you can get in health food/supplement stores, etc. I did a quick Internet check, but here it seems to be mostly used for baldness in Humans (say what?). If you have any inside information that you might share, I'd appreciate it, including any information on health food/supplement stores in Tokyo (although I'd probably end up ordering over the Internet). I'll get working on this myself, but just thought you might already know...And if I've asked you this question before, please forgive!!! I seem to be getting a bit forgetful lately...

May all the poops continue in a healthy and timely fashion...

Thanks to Mooch (way to poop!) and everyone for their responses. I'm just ripping my hair out because the boys (Quatchie & Geezer) have been doing well on wet + dry for the past 4-5 yrs., but now with Quatchie's ordeal and conflicting info from the young lady wet-behind-the-ears vet, who knows? They like their kibble, but I can see where wet is more natural. And they are already indoor-outdoor kitties, so they do get mice and birds and snakes and heaven knows what else they find, plus all the grass they care to nibble. I think once we get Quatchie recovered, we will investigate the best of wet AND dry. Thanks everyone!

Quatchie & Geezer - If my guys were indoor and outdoor, I might just go with wet + dry, too, especially if they seem happy and healthy with that system. You lucky guys for being able to hunt and get fresh meat whenever you want! Yes, you'll want to check out dry and wet foods that contain as little grain as possible (grain-free being the best, of course). Good luck!

Harvey - "cocatulations" LOL. I did laugh when I saw that, but I knew what you meant!

I just spent the last hour divvying up tiny spoonfuls of pumpkin puree onto tiny squares of saran wrap. It was not pleasant. Midway I decided to dump the rest of the can. I'll definitely go the baby food route next time. Great idea.

Hey, by the way, I've been checking out the meat departments to get an idea about raw in Japan........like you mentioned about yakitori (a chicken dish in Japan for those of you reading), there are lots of fresh innards available. I bought some chicken liver and heart, and also some raw pork. Mooch even ate a couple pieces of pork to my delight. However, it took my vegetarian hands nearly an hour and a half to cut up and divvy those things into tiny saran wrap squares, too, and I had to talk to myself the entire time LOL. I have no idea what I'm thinking.

Thank you for the info on kittens and their having more digestive problems than adults. Cham had often had too soft or too hard stools since when she came to live with me, however a few weeks ago when I started limiting her dry intake, she started making the most beautiful poos, and I was totally excited about it. Mooch, Yoyo and Lulu never really had any problems...until now.

I'm hoping this is all due to the "accidental" sudden increase in dry while I was on my business trip, and then the sudden loss of dry on my return.

I think I opened about 4 cans of different wet today and most of it will go into the toilet in a few hours. Not to mention all the freeze-dried meat snacks, steamed chicken, grilled salmon and whatnot I took out to try to tempt them to eat more wet.

I'm getting long-winded.

I'm sorry, I don't know where you might be able to find L-lysine. I'm not even familiar with it. I'll keep my eyes open for it when I'm surfing around.

As for health food/supplement stores in Tokyo,....hmm.

Did you look here:

http://www.max-online.jp/

I haven't been doing much research on supplements, so I'm not so familiar with what might be available. Again, if I come across anything, I'll be sure to tell you.

By the way, thank you for telling me I can call on you should we need a good dentist!

Okay. I've got wet food to throw.

P.S. After Mooch took his poo, I got him to eat a bunch of wet food by putting freeze-dried chicken flakes on it....and then he threw up. shrug Poor guy. I hope he'll eat well tomorrow.

shock Mooch do not give your kittie raw pork , this is not good for them. I read it somewhere that cats should not eat pork.
I dont think that cats would eat pig in the wild
it can be dangerous to feed them this raw
I will try and find the link
Anyone else know of this?

Yes, I was wondering about that pork thing, too. When I was growing up, the conventional wisdom was that pork should be well-cooked to prevent trichinosis, which CatWikipedia describes as "a parasitic disease caused by eating raw or undercooked pork and wild game infected with the larvae of a species of roundworm Trichinella spiralis, commonly called the trichina worm." This article does go on to mention that trichinosis usually comes from home reared pigs, particularly in the developing world, rather than the porkers you buy in the supermarket. Obviously, not all diseases are common between humans and cats, but it might be good to check that raw pork is okay for cats.

On a totally different note, on the Raw Food Diet Forum, someone mentioned that cooked chicken was not as nutritious as raw chicken for cats. I asked if this were true for humans as well, as I was genuinely curious about this, but got no answer.

Sorry, this post has nothing to do with constipation! silenced

Hi, Shadow and Harvey,

Thanks for the heads up on pork.

On the rawfed forum, apparently everyone feeds raw pork and it is even suggested as a good starter for raw. Cats have a short digestive track, and higher amounts of stomach acid, so it's supposed to be no problem. Cats wouldn't "naturally" eat beef, venison, and the likes either,....

What on earth am I talking about?! I'm a freaking vegetarian!!

After getting some advice from rawfed, I'm taking a big step backwards and going back to half dry half wet. My guys just aren't eating enough. When I gave my guys their favorite dry this morning (along with the wet they COMPLETELY ignored LOL), they gobbled away and it was such a happy site to see.

We're going to take it slow and wean back to a comfortable 75% wet 25% dry and see how it goes. I've also bought some Nature's Variety Medallions to try out. Who knows, maybe they'll like it better than wet.

Which also has nothing to do with constipation, but my threads as of late don't seem to stay in the theme of their titles anyway. big laugh

Harvey, oops, haha, I forgot to respond about the chicken.

Yeah, I wonder why there's such a difference between cooking and raw. You'd think humans would eat more meat raw in that case. Though Japanese eat a lot of raw stuff...even beef. confused

Just thought I'd update to say that Mooch made a BOAT last night! cheer I mean, it was a big enough one that I myself would have been very proud to have made.

Chami also got a good one out. happy dance

And I found one more in the litter box this morning, but I don't know if it was Yoyo's or Lulu's.

At any rate, we all feel much relief!

Thanks for the poo power, all. And pumpkin advice.
