Lump on Nose

This forum is for cat lovers seeking everyday advice and suggestions on health-related issues. Remember, however, that advice on a public forum simply can't be a substitute for proper medical attention. Only your vet can say assuredly what is best for your cat.

Back in December, Mommy noticed a lump on my nose that she swears was not there before. Since then, she has waffled, looking through my photographs, trying to figure out if it was there or not. It hasn't gotten smaller, but isn't going away, either. Over the past two weeks, Mommy has noticed that when I am at rest, my mouth sometimes hangs open a bit. She's not sure if I'm breathing through my mouth or if it's just a new *thing*. Either way, she took me back to the vet to discuss all of this. Our vet wants me to go to a specialist for either a CAT scan or to get a biopsy (which is a pretty involved process on the nose). The doctor said it could just be that I got bumped on the nose - but that it could also be a tumor or a fungal infection (like the other kitty, Atilla, posted about). It's unlikely that I have a fungal infection, as I'm an indoor kitty and have never had exposure to the type of soil that carries that fungus. However, Mommy is going crazy with the "what if's" now. It will be tomorrow before she can schedule the appointment (they have to process the referral first). And then she just hopes she has enough on her credit card to cover any tests that have to be done.

The vet told Mommy to quit worrying, that it won't change the outcome, anyway, and that she needs to be strong so she can be my advocate. She also reminded Mommy that it might be something totally benign. And Mommy still isn't 100% sure the lump wasn't there before. But that doesn't keep the worry from lurking in Mommy's pesky little brain.

I guess I don't need advice... Mommy is doing the right thing by taking me to a specialist. But Mommy does seem need a bit of empathy that only fellow Catsters can provide. As for me, I just want my Wellness pouches. They are yummy!

Hi Binks. I am so sorry all this is happening and your mommy is so worried. She knows she is doing the right thing by having it looked at by a specialist. That is what my mom would do too.

We will have all paws crossed that it is nothing so she can set her mind at ease.

Sending lots of purrrrrrrrrrrrs & love, Diego & Fam. hug

Hi Binks, I hope the bump is nothing serious.
Just recently my mom noticed a bump on Charlita's nose. It has actually gotten smaller, so she hasn't done anything about it yet.
We will be purring for you and your mommy that you don't have to go through many tests and the outcome is that its just a little bump and nothing else. Keep us posted on how you are.

Thank you everyone! My appointment is tomorrow at 11:00, and I can't have any food after 10 pm tonight. They said that if the vet thinks I need a biopsy or a CAT scan under sedation, they'll do it right then so that I don't have to come back. It will be a tough night with no food. Fortunately, the food goes away after LOST is off. I would hate to not have my munchies during my favorite show!

I'll keep you posted on what happens tomorrow. And thanks for understanding. I'm not sure why my Mommy gets so worried about everything, but she tells me it's because she loves us all so much!

The specialist didn't feel the need to do a biopsy or a CAT scan. She thinks that Matilda scratched me on the nose back in December (Mommy first noticed the fur parted on my nose before she saw the lump). She says it may never go away, but that it doesn't alarm her at all. She described symptoms I'd be having if it were cancer or a fungal infection, and I'm not having any of those. She even didn't charge Mommy the entire $125 office fee - just $80 - since I was such a charming patient!

Mommy feels better about things and we are all going to enjoy our Spring-like day now.

Yea Binks! So glad to hear that it was just a scratch!
Mom thinks that was what Charlitas' bump was too.
