My sisters kitty, BeBop, has Inflamatory Bowel Disease or Intestinal Lymphoma. Both are treated the same: Prednisone every day and Leukeran every other day.We have to wear a disposable glove to touch the Leukeran as it is "chemotherapy". This 10 year old female is down below 5 lbs. She has little quality of life. She now is terrified of people because she hates getting "pilled". Now, not to brag, but I'm pretty good at pilling cats but this one has me puzzled. No one can even hold her much less attempt to open her mouth. She foams at the mouth before you even get close enough to pill her. I know this cat is not getting nor holding in her meds. I do, many times a day go after her to pet her, just for a min before she runs so we have contact besides the pilling.I have tried crushing it and putting it in food, put that rarely works as I'm guessing her tummy isn't too happy in the first place.
There is talk of "putting her down" when she gets below a certain weight as soon after her organs would fail. The big thing I am trying to do in the week I have left here is to be 100% certain she is getting her meds down everytime. Maybe then she will fell better and will eat which would make her feel better and she will eat, etc.shrug
Any ideas?

I used to take a different steroid, Dexamethasone, for IBD. It was liquid, with little odor or flavor, so Mom would stir it into a spoonful of my favorite Gerber's chicken baby food. I licked up every drop just like it was a treat. (My vet approved this method.)

Does she like baby food or have some other thing she loves? Baby food (the meat only 2nd Foods) is also soothing on an upset tummy and might help her through this period when she doesn't feel like eating. It's not a complete diet for long-term use, though.

Can you get the Pred (or a substitute) in liquid and try it in something you know she'll eat? It didn't work for Mom to crush the pill and put it in baby food -- I could detect it.

Most medicines can also be compounded into a transdermal cream that could be rubbed into her ears. Is this what you're doing with the chemo? If she would accept that, you could get the Pred made into a transdermal.

Here are two websites for medicating a cat, in case there is any advice on them that might help:

Best wishes to you. I'll be purring that you can help her through this and she'll start feeling better.

Hey Scooter,
Thanks for the reply. I have been reading ALOT on Catster tonight about kitties with similair illnesses and problems. I have a whole page of notes to ask my sisters vet tomorrow. I think my sisters has a let's wait and see approach and I think this kitty needs intervention NOW. She shows no signs of will-to-live. I'm gonna check out the links you gave me and get some much needed sleep.
Thanks Again!hail

We are so sorry to hear about this poor little sick kitty. I am a little devil when it comes to taking pills, but my mom found treats called pill pockets (sold at some vets and some pet stores) where you pop the pill inside the treat and smush it shut. Sometimes I will eat these and sometimes I won't but it is worth a try. My sister Matilda takes her thyroid pill twice a day and loves the pill pockets. They come in all different flavors too. Good luck!

There is a pharmacy in Texas (BCP) that can make both of these meds into a chewie treat. They can make just about any flavor (seafood, tuna, chicken liver, etc.) Have your vet call them if you think this may work for you. (1-800-481-1729).

Another option would be to learn to give injections. The Prednisone can be given under the skin. The Leukeran however, would still need to be ad ministered as a pill. You can call a local compounding pharmacy to see if they can make this drug into a transdermal (I don't think it can be, but worth checking) or as a liquid (which may be easier to give than a pill).

Good Luck. I'll be purring for you!

If you do pill, you must make sure to follow the pill with some water. Dry pilling can cause throat problems as described here: http://catinfo.org/pillingcats.htm

You can try Pill Pocket treats to make a pill easier to give, http://www.pillpockets.com/

I convinced my Bro-in-law to take BeBop to his old vet. They changed up her meds. 2 are liquids, plus the 2 pills. The vet was very imformitive, but really doubted I was pilling correctly. SO, I had the vet give her the liquid, and lo and behold, he had never seen a kitty be so tramatized by taking meds. We are gonna try it for a week or so and if it's not going better we'll do shots and transdermal.

That's great news! I was also going to suggest "Pill Pockets". I am the worst pill taker in the world. Just like your kitty, I start foaming up the minute I see the pill. I'm also really good at holding in my mouth long enough for Mama and Daddy to think that I've swallowed it. Then I spit it out! laugh out loudlaugh out loud

Out of desperation they tried the Pill Pockets. I LOVE them. It was my special treat that I got twice a day. I couldn't wait to get them!
