Well said Atrus. Really, some facilities offer spaying for less than $50. I realize that to someone broke that can seem like a lot of money, but I guarantee you that it's going to be a lot less than what it would cost to feed and house a future momcat and kittens for 8 weeks.

Spaying can be expensive, but caring for kittens is a lot more expensive (think of those future vet bills, yikes!)

Chloe was spayed at 5 1/2 months and she hadn't gone into heat yet. The shelter I volunteer at does spay/neuter surgery as soon as the kitten is 2 lbs, so they can go up for adoption at 3 months old.

I was spayed when I was 4 months at a special price b/cmom does rescue and I was one(then she adopted me yeah). SThen she he went to a house to see a rescue situation; there was a mom that looked exactly like me, my age and she had 3 kittens. All got adopted eventually but it made mom glad to know I was spayed.
