I am so frustrated with Sprinkles right now!!

	She is being so annoying. She learned how to open the cabinet recently, she always is trying to get at my dog Chocolate's Wellness CORE food. Yesterday despite the fact she had just had just eaten a bowl of eagle pack cat food,plus seconds, she dragged Chocolate's dog food out of the cabinet and some of the kibble fell out, and she ate it. So I sealed the bag shut so if she knocked it over again, kibble wouldn't spill out. this morning I came out to find the bag 3 feet away from the cabinet sprawled out on the floor with puncture holes in it and kibble spilling out and I was so mad I just wanted to go over to the bed she was sleeping in and dump a bucket of ice water on her head!. (but of course she has to be so friggin cute so it's hard to stay mad)How do I keep her away from the food cabinet! Edited by author Thu Jul 2, '09 10:24am PST

	I'm sure there are child safety locks for cabinets that would also keep out cats. I have seen some while house hunting, meant to keep toddlers from getting into under the sink cabinets to get at chemicals. Depending in the type of handle/knob there are lots of kinds available.

	I keep my dog's food in a large sealed plastic bin like a huge Tupperware thing. It looks sort of like a trash can with a sealed lid. I got it in the plastics aisle at Target and it's made for pet food and comes with it's own scoop. They have them at Petco too but they cost more. I just do it to keep it fresh because I buy the large bag but it would also help keep Sprinkles out of it. Mine is too big to keep in the kitchen (or rather, my kitchen is too small...LOL) so I just keep a smaller amount in a Rubbermaid cereal storage container for the week until I need to refill from the larger one. And please don't be anrgy at Sprinkles. Punishment is never a good idea with a cat. She is just doing what comes naturally so she won't understand what she did wrong.

	Why the heck, would you want to dump ice water on a little cat, that is 100 times smaller than you, and depends on you, for her care? She would have no idea, why she is being punished, and all it does is teach her to fear you. I have little kittens, and I can't tell you the stuff they have gotten into, broken and wrecked, it goes with the territory. If you get that upset, that you want to harm her, when she does something wrong, maybe a cat is not for you. I would also suggest, you never get a young kitten, as they cause alot of damage. I store my cat food in the cubbards above the sink, where the kittens can't reach it, or they would be getting into it too. If you have a large bag, and this is not possible, you can do what Allie suggested and get a storage bin. You can also get a hook eye latch, that has a slidy thingy on it, so Sprinkles can't get it open. You can get them at any hardware store and they are inexpensive. Don't mean to sound so critical, but the others on here, know how I am. Best of luck.

	We get in the cabinets. We can also flip the lid on the oval slowcooker. After we got in the cabinet and licked a box of lard and threw 5 pounds of flour on the floor and broke a bottle of red wine, mom put those childproof lock things on the knobs to keep us out. 	bumpurr-having the "evil" desire to get a cat wet because you're frustrated at them is normal. the poster did not in any way intimate that she would actually do it...it was more like a parent saying: "god makes them cute so you won't kill them"...in other words, a joke. also, if she had said: "i was so aggravated i wanted to kick her across the room" that would be one thing. dumping water on a cat would startle them but it's non-lethal and not particularly violent-in fact, spraying a cat with a spritzer or water pistol is RECOMMENDED as a deterrent. of course, you only do this when the cat is "caught in the act", and dumping water on a cat who is basically sleeping would be a nasty trick...but it's also something the poster had no intention of doing. it was a JOKE. about keeping food away from sprinkles-i know this sounds odd, but until you can get child safety locks or some sort of kitty-proof container, consider sticking the dog food in the microwave-if it fits-or the oven if it doesn't fit in the mike. this is more of a stopgap than a solution, and it goes without saying (and yet, i'm saying it ) that you should stay compos mentis enough to remove said dog food before you cook food for humans. worth a shot?

	Little Bee - the slow cooker lid, huh? Sounds like some good fun!! Lucky for me, Isabelle is super well behaved - the most "trouble" she causes is sitting on the counter to look out the back door (so we now know to lysol before every use, hee hee). And I LOVE your name - how incredibly cute!

	whoa lol thank you kaya sky, I felt like I was about to have to face animal cruelty charges for making a harmless joke that many cat owners make. Saying that I shouldn't even be owning a cat is a bit far. We love Sprinkles and she's impossible to resist. I wouldn't be on catster if I hated my cat. thanks guys for your suggestions , I think I'm going to start using plastic containers to keep the little stinker from stealing lol

	Sprinkles, your mom can also use rubber bands tied around the cabinet handles as a stopgap measure while you go out and get proper childproof locks. Do keep in mind that some cats will eat rubber bands or other inappropriate things, so she can only do it if she knows won't try to eat them (mom's note: in other words, I could do it with Boris when he was an only cat, but definitely not now with Gracie the inappropriate chewer around). Where it gets fun is when they learn to open drawers. Cabinets are a cinch, opening mommy's underwear drawer in the middle of the night and climb in there takes skill.
