Catster Photos FAQs
Help! I can't upload photos from my computer to your site! How can I resize my photos?
We strive to make our photo uploading features as smart as possible, but there are limits. Your images should be less then 5Mb (megabytes) and in either a gif, or jpeg file format (see our other question about file types). It's pretty easy to convert your images to gif or jpeg or to optimize their file sizes for web-viewing, using photo editing software. If you don't have any you know of on your computer, here are a couple great web-based services to modify photos: PicResize and Wiredness. And here's a list of Freeware for optimizing photos for the web.

Help! I don't have a digital camera or digital photos, how can I get a digital picture?
There are a couple ways. 1) Ask a friend with a digital camera or camera phone to take pictures of your cat and email them to you. Then upload those attached files to our site 2) Take pictures of your cat with a film camera and get a copy of the developed on a digital CD. 3) Find a friend with a photo scanner, bring over some printed photos and scan them. (Note that scanner create very big files, so you may want to select the option to save the photos for the web so they are easier to upload)
What image file formats do you accept?
Catster currently supports JPEG (.jpg and .jpeg) and GIF (.gif, both regular and animate) image files. We hope to be able to allow for PNG and BMP soon.
What are animated gifs and can I upload animated images?
A 'gif' is a popular computer image file type and we support all versions of them, animated or regular. All 'gifs' have a file extension of '.gif'. A popular component of gifs is that you can store multiple versions of an images in a single file and have them play back like an animation. This is how people are able to give the appearance of movement in their cat photos. Most all photo and image editing software support the gif format and many have special features to make it easy to make an animated gif. Check out the other question about decorating photos for web services to make animated images. (Note we are unable to support animated flash or java files)
