Arrival Story:
Pippin is the second kitten that we kept out of a litter of 4 born into the family. Loki is his brother, and they are best friends and rivals, as only siblings can be. As a kitten, he would often instigate rivalry with Loki (the biggest of the litter), then turn around and snuggle with the dog. Pippin has always been the scrawny one, and the prettiest. Everyone who meets him immediately refers to him as "she". True to his Ocicat heritage, his curiosity, and cleverness often lands him in the hot seat (though he is so pretty and affectionate, he doesn't stay there long). When he was only 4 months old, he decided to test his agility on the stairs, and broke a leg in the process. A few pins, and a month of confinement, and all is well... he can still jump from the floor to the top of the 'fridge!

Bio:
Pippin has had a little bit of a crisis recently. A couple months ago, he went off his food and kept losing weight. After several vet visits, we had to go in for an emergency liver biopsy. It was discovered that his liver has been under attack on two fronts; bile back-up into the liver, and a super nasty bacteria that made itself at home. He is currently on various liver support medications to help the liver repair and antibiotics to fight the bacteria. Since we have to be aggressive with the antibiotics, and they upset his tummy, we are also feeding through an esophageal tube. All things considered, he is actually doing fairly well, though he is not out of the woods yet, and it looks like a long battle ahead. UPDATE 01/06/09: Pippin is doing much better. It was touch and go for several months where his liver ALT levels kept climbing. They peaked out at about 860! (100-ish is normal). After two lengthy rounds of antibiotics, we decided to start treatment for inflammation. I also took a little initiative and increased his SAM-e and Milk Thistle doses. His latest blood work showed his ALT number has fallen down to 230! Yay! We are most grateful to our Catster friends who have kept us in their thoughts and purrs. Power of the Paw works another wonder.

Whaddya mean "Crybaby"?!

Mom's been calling me a "Crybaby"!

Wut?

Just because I love my food? Or because I want MOAR?

MOAR MOAR MOAR!!!!

Or is it because I constantly have to remind her when I need my pills? Not my fault!
I know when I get my pills.
I like getting my pills.
Mom makes them yummy yum yum yum! In fact, she's gotten so good at giving me my pills I hardly get a chance to taste the yummy wet food she coats them with. So I want moar!

MOAR MOAR MOAR!!

I don't think that makes me a "crybaby".
hmph!

Happy New Year

I am starting the New Year on a good paw; My ALT levels that had peaked at 860 have fallen to 230! Yay!

I still have to take my medicines about 4 times a day, but Mom and I have a good routine down, so it only takes a few seconds. Mom covers my pills with a bit of yummy wet food. She sticks the pill waaaaaay back in my mouth, almost down my throat (she's gotten quick about it too!). The wet food helps the pills slide right down and there's always a bit left on Mom's fingers that she lets me lick off.

Dad has tried a few times, but his aim isn't so good. He usually ends up leaving the pill to the side of my mouth, which makes it hard to swallow. He says he'll just leave it to the expert, but Mom says he needs to keep trying. *sigh* Guess I'll try to be patient with him.

I also want to say thank you so much for the purrs and good thought notes from our Catster friends. This liver thing has been a long and arduous battle, hopefully we will see an end to this little war in 2009.

Blessings and purrs to all for the coming year.

PROTEST!!

Where do I lodge a formal protest?
Who makes the coolest picket signs?

I want to go picket my Vet-lady's office!

She told my Mom to stuff more pills down me!

She said to take one pill away, but gave me a different one in it's place.
*ears flick*

I guess my vitamin B levels are high, so I don't need that anymore. But my bile acids are also high, which means my liver is still not doing its job properly.

The Vet-lady says its either still the nasty bacteria, or inflammation. The Vet-lady said we should do another biopsy for a culture, but Mom said "can't happen". So the Vet-lady said the other option was to give me a low dose of steroids and monitor for changes.

Moar pills?!!!?!!?!!!?
*tail twitch*

So, what do you think I should put on my picket signs?
