Arrival Story:
i got charlie at the humane society adoption center located in a local pet store. when i went in to look at cats, the volunteer first showed me loretta, and then said "and if you're a sympathetic person..." and then gestured to charlie. his owner had died and he had been surrendered to the humane society. because of this traumatization, he slept most of the time, stayed in his cat bed, and didn't really like to be around people. "i take him out and pet him a lot, because i think he really needs it," the volunteer went on. "but i don't think he likes it." i have a bit of a bleeding heart so i sat down and asked if i could hold him. she pried him out of his cat bed and sat him on my lap, and as soon as i started to pet him he purred and uncurled. "he's never done that with ANYBODY!" the volunteer said. adopting charlie was more complicated than loving him. the staff noticed some strange hair loss on one of his ears and thought he might have ear mites, so i took loretta home while charlie was shipped to the main shelter to be treated. he came home almost a month after loretta and hid under the couch for most of the first few weeks, but now he is more visible and, i think, pretty happy here. :)

Bio:
charlie and loretta came as a pair. they weren't from the same home -- loretta was a stray -- but she adores charlie. when he was still grieving, she would climb into his bed with him and give him baths. they slept together. it was as if she knew he needed a friend. now that he's happier she terrorizes him a fair amount, but still grooms him, and they nap together during the day. so the terrorizing appears to be in good fun. :)

i like to wait in bed for my person to come down but last night it was almost one and she still wasn't there!! so i went upstairs and found that she had fallen asleep on the couch waiting for her laundry to be done. i woke her right up and led her downstairs to bed because i can't sleep unless she is there. she seemed to like this trick so maybe i will do it again.

this morning she walked in on me while i was in the litterbox. how rude.
