Arrival Story:
Whiskers was the runt of a litter of five kittens which was four males and one female born on 2/29/1988. Yes, they were Leap Day kittens! She was all gray and looked like a Russian Blue kitty with amber eyes with slight green around the iris. When I got her at all of six weeks, she barely had any fur on her tail so it look more like a rat's tail than a kitty's tail. I hadn't prepared very well for her and only had a box with an old sweater of mine to pick her up in. She wouldn't stay in the box and sat on my chest the whole way back home (about 10 minute drive). I lived in a little cottage in the back of the main house on a nice quiet street. I tried to keep Whiskers in doors but one night she jumped out the window (no screens on the windows) to land in the bush below which was about two feet from the ground. When she got older, she had the thickest fur that was so soft. It was softer than a chinchilla fur. Whiskers wasn't an overly affectionate kitty until the last 6-7 years of her life. During these years in the wintertime, she would sleep on my chest and in the summertime, she would come sit on the couch and I would lie down and put my arms around her of which would cause her to purr. I would play with a string with her at times as I didn't give her much in the way of toys. I think she was really starved for attention at times in those last 4 years or so as she wanted to be with me whereever I was in the small apartment I had before I got married. She died of chronic kidney failure on Jan 28th, 2005 which was eight days after I got married. I guess she figured it was time to go. I wish she hadn't left and so I keep her ashes in a box on my bookcase with a small tuft of her fur. I know I have Sylvester and Mia but Whiskers was extra special being my first kitty.
