This is the next-to-the-last photo of Jimmy-Joe. He had gotten so thin. He spent hours looking out the window at his land, with his friend Flaca by his side.

This is the very last picture of Jimmy-Joe. Flaca seems to be comforting him. In the wee hours of the following morning, Jimmy-Joe passed peacefully to the Rainbow Bridge.

Arrival Story:
A few months before we adopted Jimmy-Joe in August of 1992, I had found another gray and white kitten abandoned on the fairgrounds near our home. I had done many animal rescues, and took the little fellow in with the intention of finding him a new home. While he was with us, I called him "Jimmy-Joe". My son Jesse, who was 9 years old at the time, fell in love with the kitten and wanted to keep him, but he said this about nearly every cat that I rescued so I didn't take his wishes seriously. A couple of weeks later, the kitten was placed in a loving permanent home. To my surprise, Jesse was inconsolable, and I felt very bad that I hadn't kept this particular kitten for him. A couple of months passed by, and we were driving home one evening when I spotted several kittens in a neighbor's front yard. One of them was very similar in appearance to the original "Jimmy-Joe". Jokingly, I said to my son, "There's Jimmy-Joe", and he replied, "That IS Jimmy-Joe! Can we stop?" Of course it wasn't the same kitten, but I saw no harm in stopping to pet it. When we got out of the car, the kitten literally leaped into the air with excitement. Jesse played with it for about 45 minutes, but then it was time to go home. Jesse asked if we could take the kitten with us but I told him that wouldn't be right, as it was probably the neighbor's pet. The next day while Jesse was at school, I knocked on the neighbor's door and told him about our experience the previous night. I asked if by any chance he would let us adopt the kitten. The neighbor told me that he and his wife had recently moved into the house, and found that the previous owners had left two pregnant cats behind, so they really did need to find homes for some of the kittens. He said that the gray-and-white kitten, whom he called "Theo", was born on April 3rd and was "the best one". Although he was reluctant to part with him, he kindly agreed to let me take the kitten home. I tied a ribbon around the kitten's neck along with a little heart-shaped tag that said "I'm yours!", and surprised Jesse with the kitten when he came home from school.

Bio:
We changed the kitten's name from Theo to Jimmy-Joe. Interestingly, he and the original Jimmy-Joe, whose owners had changed their cat's name to "Trooper", became "Paw-Pals" who exchanged Christmas cards and photographs for the next 15 Christmases. Jimmy-Joe turned out to be the sweetest, most affectionate cat imaginable. He LOVED food! (When he was still a kitten, he dragged a pizza that was twice his size down off the kitchen counter and halfway down the hall before we discovered his deed.) Jimmy-Joe developed a femural embolism when he was three years old; He spent six days in the hospital and then the vet told me that it was a congenital condition and J.J. wouldn't live more than another year-and-a-half. Jimmy-Joe proved him wrong by surviving (and living well!) for another twelve years! We moved out to the country in 2004, when Jimmy-Joe was 12 years old and still quite healthy. Jimmy-Joe loved his new home, and claimed a boulder in our front yard as his favorite lookout point. We named the boulder "Boodle Rock" because Jimmy-Joe's nickname was Boodle. He weighed 20 pounds when he was in his prime, but dropped down to 8 pounds in the last few months of his life. Jimmy-Joe lost his battle with kidney failure and died in my arms in the early morning hours of April 5, 2007, two days after his fifteenth birthday. He purred right up until the end. He is buried at the foot of Boodle Rock.
