Arrival Story:
My building manager feeds 2 colonies of feral cats. Misty was a young mama cat that showed up at our building. The building manager was scared for the kittens and she took them from Misty and put them inside in a box thinking that Misty was going to come in for them. Well that's not the case with feral cats they generally do not trust humans and will not follow their young. Misty still ate at the feeding station. And the land lady ended up raising the kittens and then finding them homes. Misty would not let the manager even touch her. But she eventually got trapped and spayed. Then she was released at the apartment building. The Manager was still feeding her when the owner of the building said that she was going to have to get rid of her. The building manager knew that I had just lost Kenny and I was allowed to have 3 cats. Several agencies have said that she was not adoptable and that they wouldn’t take her. Misty ran out of options. The manager was pretty upset about the situation she was going to have to be taken to a kill shelter. I was this animal’s last chance at a home. When Misty was brought to the house she was Very scared of the new house with the smell of other two cats and the like but she was also very curious. She had seen me with Kenny walking around the building and Kenny even sniffed her a few times though she was extremely timid if humans she wasn’t scared of other cats. I decided it was with in her best interest to leave her alone for a while and let her do her own thing. Till she became more interested in what the October and Lardo were doing. She would spy Lardo laying on me or October getting a good scratch and she would watch in agony. I made every effort for her to be comfortable plenty of food and water. One day I was cleaning out the Hamsters cage and I put the hamster down in its ball to run around the house and get some exercise. Misty made for the ball and was looking at the hamster and wasn’t paying attention to human hands and I reached down and started petting her. She didn’t even realize that it was me petting her. When she would realize it was a human touching her she would run away and then come back totally focused on the Hamster in the ball and I would pet her some more. The hamster is completely safe in the ball and I was always watching her with it. BUT I know that it terrifying to the hamster to have a cat there watching you. So we bought a mechanical hamster in ball. And soon I would just put it down on the ground and she would come out for a pet. Soon I didn’t need the ball to get her to come out. She started coming out on her own and joining in on the attention. It took 3 months to get her to come to us to be petted. Now she is a bed hog like the other cats. You would never know that she was a wild feral cat. The things that make her especially cute are her short legs. She is like a wienie dog of cats. Misty has personality and she is a very sweet cat. My boyfriend calls me a cat whisperer because it’s almost as if I know what my cats are saying to me with out words. What he doesn’t realize is that the animals all love me because I am a giant cat that brings them food and leads them to fresh water and always keep the litter box free of debris. Misty is the newest edition to my family. I am glad to have been the one to bring her out of her shell and get her to trust humans again. Things that make me sad about Misty is that she is always pulling my hand to her belly. I can tell that she misses her kittens. I feel that she was not given the chance to raise her babies. If there is ever an opportunity for me to get a kitten to rear I would do it for her so she could get closure with that issue she has.
