Arrival Story: We had originally been looking at cats online at the shelter's website, and we found three that we were really interested in. But when we got there, all three of them had URIs, and we didn't want to bring that home to Sampson. So we looked at the healthy cats, and it just so happened that Desi was the second one we picked up. As soon as we held him, he started purring away, and he wrapped his little arms around our necks and looked up at us with his big little kitten eyes and those crazy whiskers of his, there was no way we could leave without him. From the information the shelter papers had, he was a stray before he was brought in, which could account for his lack of social skills with people.
Bio: The best way to describe Desi would be by comparing him to a laidback surfer dude. He has an air of nonchalance about him that just screams, "Hey. I'm cool." He even has a swagger - his gait is influenced by the fact that his elbows point slightly outward. Personified, it could be considered similiar to the way wrestlers or bodybuilders walk. One of his most endearing qualities is his whiskers.. they almost seem to have a mind of their own. Some days they curl, some days they're all over the place, and some days they scrunch up to make him look like the Einstein of the feline world. It's a good thing he doesn't seem to give a damn, or else he might be a little self-conscious! One thing a little odd about Desi is that he doesn't like to take initiative. He'll meow for attention, or sit there and look up at you until you pick him up (at which point he'll start purring and relax), but he never really jumps up or approaches us for petting. If we don't initiate it, he doesn't seem to have the courage to himself. He also doesn't give us headbutts, or arch his back and raise his tail in a happy manner the way Max does when we pet him. But he seems to us to be a very calm, deep-thinking cat that's very special. For example, when we pet-sitted a neighbor's puppy for them, it wasn't used to cats and tried to play with Desi on several occasions. At one point in time, Desi decided not to run, but to sit in front of the puppy and simply observe him. And this wide-eyed puppy that had been doing nothing but slobbering on and attempting to hump the cats every chance he got, stopped where he stood, inches from Desi, and stared right back at him, like they were having a conversation. After about ten minutes, the puppy turned around, without once harassing Desi, and found other means to entertain himself. The same thing happened when Desi was lounging on top of the puppy's crate. The puppy jumped up and stared at Desi for several minutes, while Desi calmly stared back. He'll do the same thing with Sampson - if he starts bothering him, Desi just stops and they look at each other for several minutes, and Sampson will leave him alone. In fact, Sampson very rarely even sniffs in Desi's direction anymore. Whatever Desi does, it keeps dogs in line. Sadly, we had to put Desi to sleep on February 2, 2007, due to the dry form of FIP. He had wasted away to nothing but skin and bones, had become incontinent, and refused food.. and nothing we did was working. He was only six months old.

I've Been On Catster Since:
On February 2nd, 2007, at 3:15 pm, we put Desi to sleep. After weeks of what started with an upper respiratory infection, then transgressed into uveitis, and then finally becoming more and more apparent it was FIP, there was nothing left we could do. The medications were no longer helping him, he was refusing all food, and he was becoming incontinent. He lost a drastic amount of weight, and was only 4.1 lbs at the end, and nothing but skin and bones. Despite that, he purred all the way to the end.
Rest in peace, Desi.
"They say memories are golden
well maybe that is true
I never wanted memories,
I only wanted you.
A million times I needed you,
a million times I cried.
If love alone could have saved you
you never would have died.
In life I loved you dearly,
In death I love you still.
In my heart you hold a place
no one could ever fill.
If tears could build a stairway
and heartache make a lane,
I'd walk the path to heaven
and bring you back again.
Our family chain is broken,
and nothing seems the same.
But as God calls us one by one,
the chain will link again."
I've been sick for the past few weeks, and after too many vet visits, they told Mom she should get me tested for FIP. So they took my blood and sent it off.
And I do. It's the dry form, but it's still FIP. Mom's so upset - she did everything they told her to after her last kitty, so she doesn't understand why I have it. She says she must just be unlucky. She's tryin' to find out if it's contagious to Max..or if he already got the coronavirus and won't develop it. I hope it isn't! If I get better, I wanna stay with him, not "go to sleep". I've been sleeping too much lately! I wanna be awake!
I got a cold, can you believe it? Mom took me to the vet yesterday and they took my temperature (which I didn't enjoy, and I let the entire clinic know it) which was 105-degrees! So now I got to take medicine two times a day, AND I have to stay in the bathroom with Mom when she showers 'cause the vet says the steam with decongest me.. and the worst part of all - Mom's supposed to give me BENADRYL once a day! Yucckkkkk. She bought the cherry stuff, and she gave it to me last night, and it was GROSS. I got so upset and started foaming at the mouth from it and I gagged and then I sulked behind the desk, so she couldn't give me any more. She says she was sorry, but I don't think she really is.
She says she hopes I act like a normal kitten once my cold goes away, 'cause I've been sneezing for a couple weeks now, but I was activer. I kinda hope so, too, 'cause I really really hate Benadryl.
