Arrival Story: We wanted a female Siamese kitten -- I called around and searched the paper for weeks and finally an ad appeared. We had first pick, but couldn't decide. The children in the family selling the kittens said, "This one's a girl-- she's nice," so we took that one. They were right about the "girl" part. But she was a feisty little devil. She mellowed some in, oh, about 12 years. But she stole our hearts immediately, and she has big chunks of them with her still.
Bio: SooLing was born Jan. 2, 1984 in Chicago, but moved with us several times. She flew with us on one move and preferred flying over car travel; O'Hare Airport fascinated her! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ SooLing had real cattitude. She loved being told she was beautiful. But she wasn't a princess -- she was The Queen. No doubt about it. Everything was put there for her; everything belonged to her, including us. She was proud, and she was determined. She was the definition of perverse. She'd strut in front of visitors, get right up next to them, then when they put a hand out to pet her -- "whap!" Actually, it was only a pretend slap, unless they didn't take the hint. Then, it was slap, grab and bite. Bad kitty! She absolutely hated anyone looking at her, uh, butt. Yet, she'd habitually parade into a room full of people, plop down center stage, throw one leg over her head, and start licking you-know-where. Weird kitty! And, she was one of those cats who picked out the allergic person or the cat-hater in the room, then took up residence beside them. Wicked kitty! We couldn't (and wouldn't) have changed her, so we just enjoyed her devilishness. It still makes me chuckle. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ But she was loving, too, on her terms. Petting and holding (when she wanted) were good, but noooo hugs or kisses. She purred the moment we touched her. She absolutely worshipped her Dad. Her eyes lit up when she saw him. She followed him around, squawking in her deep, cranky Siamese voice until he sat down and provided her a lap. Her love for me was fierce and deep, too, but different. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ As she aged, she was more loving, and she was grateful, too, for the care we gave her. The last couple weeks of her life, we catered to her nonstop -- we wanted her to go out in the royal style she deserved, before her dignity suffered any more. Her pride was so important, right up to the end. Thank goodness for veterinarians who make house calls. We absolutely couldn't let our SooLing, who hated vets and vet offices so intensely, spend her last moments there. She had already picked her spot to withdraw to, so we knew it was fitting for her to be put to sleep there. She was still the boss. We told her she was beautiful one last time, June 23, 2003. My final tribute (and chuckle) on behalf of SooLing: I put the container with her ashes on the top shelf of our china cabinet -- she always wanted to get into that cabinet. She finally made it. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ It's true -- "Cats leave paw prints on our hearts." SooLing left great big, deep ones on ours. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
