Arrival Story:
On her way to work at the vet clinic one morning in the summer of '05, my then-GF passed the cat shelter that's about 4 blocks away. There was a box sitting on the sidewalk outside. She got to work, opened the clinic, and couldn't shake the feeling that something was amiss with that box. Ten minutes later, she had the box back at the clinic, opened it, and got hit in the face with a nasty plume of trapped heat. There was a very dazed tabby sprawled inside. He lived in the employee break room for a while, never hissing, spitting, or swiping, but never coming out or responding to attention, either. He was rigid with fear anytime anyone came around, until one afternoon he finally came about three inches out of his kennel to hang out with Jen. This lavish display of amicability pretty much signalled that Jennifer (and I) now belonged to him. He lived in my office and for a few days didn't repeat the display of sociability that adopted us--he just sat in his kennel, except when he'd climb up into my sweaters on the top shelf.

Bio:
I didn't know then that virtually every tabby has black stripes that originate at the corner of the eye. One night, Tut let us pet him, though, and the stripes really reminded me of Egyptian hieroglyphics, so I named him King Tutankhamen. Now that he's a pharoah, he's foresworn fear and replaced it with a regal detachment from things. He won't purr as loud as Monroe, who can be heard from across the room multiple times every day, but does purr enough to set himself trembling a bit and that's enough for him. And he's supremely sociable now, plowing into us, leaping onto us, flinging himself to the floor for belly rubs at the slightest provocation. It's ordinary cat behavior, but he was such a fraidy cat just a few months ago that it's completely charming. He's even adventurous--he's the one that started the tradition of the cats coming along with Bonnie for daily walks.
